Coach Hook
Anybody remember Coach Hook, who used to teach the swimming PE class at SMU -- and I believe has been the basketball scorekeeper or clock keeper? I had him for swimming back in the late '80's. Well, I'm at the University Park pool on Saturday and I ran into him. The guy is ageless -- still sports that same beloved flat top hair cut. We talked about Cato Armstrong being in the same swimming class that summer...

I guess it is natural to assume he was at least honarary Captain of every team for which he ever played.

Q: Why does it take pirates so long to learn the alphabet?

Great guy! A friend to generations of Mustangs especially in the intramural sports area.

I took racquetball with him back in '03 or so. The guy is a beast. Could barely move around, but somehow still crushed almost everyone in class on the court.

Re: Coach Hook
I was taking a swimming class in what must have been the summer of '88. A big 6 foot 6 European swimmer walks right by the class that was going on and grabs an outside lane and begins to swim. Since we're clearly about to use that lane, this pisses Coach Hook off, all five foot five of him or however big he is, and he walks along beside the guy yelling at him at every breath. The guy just ignores him and continues swimming away. Finally, Coach Hook jumps in the water immediately in front of the guy -- who then runs into him and comes up gasping and choking water. The kid looks like he's going to throw a punch when Hook gives him this look like, that will be the last thing you ever do. Big European sheepishly and wisely backed down. One of those diminutive and nice guys who you just didn't want to mess with.

Didn't have him for a teacher but definitely recognize him. Those pictures brought back memories of Dr. Vannier and I took ballroom folk dance from Lynn Romejko.

I had him for Wellness back in the mid 90s. Used to get onto me about my weight and trying to keep in shape. I should have listened to him. Love the guy. I always try to and say hello when I see him. As previously stated, he is a class act.

Re: Coach Hook
He use to referee High School Church league basketbal games when I played in the late seventies. One of the players on our team got mad at a foul that Mr. Hook called on him, in his frustration he yells out, "Hook is no Crook!" Mr. Hook and our coach, who was a basketball stud at SMU in the 50's, where very good friends, so Mr. Hook told him if this player said it again he would kick him out of the game. Our coach yanked the player out of the game and chewed his [deleted] out up one wall and down the other. The player did get T'd up and sat the bench the rest of the game. We laugh about to this day.
GO MUSTANGS!
