I know, I know. I'm such a fun killer.
Re: Commitment No. 7
I'm all for having the discussion on the board, and I while I wish we had more Texas offers and commits, I wish we would stick to one thread about it and not turn a "Welcome our new commit" thread into a "our recruiting coaches suck" thread. Pretty poor taste.

I think Stallion and the others seem to be missing the point on June's staff and recruiting in Texas. There are more students from California who attend SMU than any other state than Texas. The explosion of students from California and specifically southern california, started to happen in the late 80s and early 90s. Pye wanted the school to not be known as the school in texas that paid their football team whose student body consisted of rich kids from Texas. He set out to make the school more of a national school (like Duke) and southern california and california was an area he wanted to target, specifically Orange and San Diego counties. Areas that were affluent and had some of the best public schools in the country....ie, good students whose parents could pay. He hired USC's top recruiter in southern california in 1991 to help bring students from CA to SMU. It was a huge success and the number of CA students at SMU today is 100% because of this. June saw this and said why do so many CA students attend SMU and how come that is not reflected on our football roster. CA kids like SMU and CA is a HUGE area for high school football talent. June also was west coast guy who had great contacts on the west coast. Additionally, he said that most 18 year old kids in TX view SMU as a pathetic program whereas CA kids dont have any knowledge/perception of SMU and no perception is better than a negative perception. Then he said, I need to go out and hire a young guy who can put this plan in motion of targeting Southern California.....hey, how about Klemm, who is from Southern California, played in the NFL, has three Superbowl Rings, and is super outgoing. June's plan was to go after those guys from CA and So CA who had Pac-10 offers not from USC and UCLA, but from Arizona, Cal, Washington State, Washington.....if a kid from that area is not going to go to USC or UCLA.....he thought he could compete against the other Pac-10 schools. And when he starts winning, he will put more of a focus on Texas.

Actually, a class really can't be judged until a couple of years down the road. Players develop differently. Judging them now, or even when they sign, is unfair and shortsighted.ponyboy wrote:How bout we wait til Feb to judge the quality of the class, chief?
I really shouldn't drink and type.
