Re: Offense
Unfortunately, our RB's only accounted for about 35 yards rushing. Foy Munlin averaged less than 2 yards per carry. If he is the best that we have, then Massey must not be as good as advertised. I'm not sure it is good when your QB's account for the majority of your rushing yards every game.
Re: Massey .... don't give up on the guy. He has a hell of a lot of talent. We've been spoiled, if you can call it that, by guys playing early, but that's been done out of necessity. In an ideal world, players would redshirt, then sit out as a backup for their RS freshman season and get only sporadic playing time as a sophomore. Massey will surprise those who give up on him. So what if it's not immediate? He's a player. Stick with him.
PS is right when he says we need more from our RBs. But as someone who was at the game, I can say this an offense that has ability. The big TE, Kennedy, looked really good. He had 3 or 4 catches, I think, and a couple of them were really nice. Surprising speed for a big guy, too.... None of the QBs was great, but none of them was terrible, either. It didn't look like Phillips is a pure sprinter, but he covers a lot of ground and he's a very strong runner.... Eckert has a really nice release, but for him and Romo, it was hard to get an accurate read, since they were playing from behind and the OSU defense - which is big and fast - was coming from everywhere. All 3 QBs made mistakes, and all 3 made plays. Not terrible, but obviously have room for improvement.... Also couldn't get an accurate read on the RBs, because the didn't run a whole lot. The thing I was looking for was more physical running from Munlin - he seemed to try to fake out defenders, to make them miss. He's a big kid, and needs to use that size and strength and dare someone to stop him.... Offensive line looked OK. They didn't blow OSU off the line, to say the least, but they also weren't getting the QBs killed, either. Based on what I've read about how thin we were up there with the 3 guys leaving before the season, I thought they looked OK.... Two WRs - Pellerin and Chase - have good size and seem to run well. I don't remember us throwing to them at all. Other WRs were pretty interchangeable, I guess. None really stood out one way or the other.
I'd say that's pretty accurate. My biggest concern on the entire FB team is WR-and what concerns me the most is that I'm not convinced we even have the kids on campus yet who could do a thing about it. Major recruiting emphasis THIS YEAR-but I really don't see many prospects who might make a difference at WR. I guess on the positive side-Kennedy and Chase should be solid hopefully by at least next year.
This is probably going to sound a little weird, but I think OSU may have showed us the right game plan for SJSU. Think about it: OSU was led by an athletic, inexperienced QB (Woods). So what did they do? Ran it down our throats behind a huge OL. They basically beat us up for 3 quarters, then when we were softened up, Woods started taking his shots downfield. They had the personnel to take advantage of us, and they did.
Now it occurs to me that SJSU is pretty small along the defensive front. They don't have any DTs over 300, and most aren't even close. Their DEs all sound more like big linebackers in the Jamar Bey, Cory Muse mode. Why can't we go with the jumbo line (Kennedy, Johnson/Poynter, Peveto, Kieschnick, Boren, Urbanus) and just pummel them for awhile to get things rolling? Also, until the fubling stops, why not let Dorsey and Henderson get some more carries? Since the turnovers are killing us, why can't we just play smashmouth against a smaller team until 1) they stop us, or 2) we soften them up?
