8 games to go...and two more Top25's to contend with.
Let the judging begin from this point forward. We need to show progress. I expect to beat SJSU, and perhaps 2 or 3 more San Jose State - a Must win at Boise State - Not likely at Rice - Perhaps, only if our offense can gel Louisiana Tech - Maybe at Fresno State - Not likely Tulsa - a Must win at home Nevada - Perhaps, only if our offense can gel at UTEP - Perhaps, only if our offense can gel If we can go 4-4, the season can marginally be reflected upon as a success considering the youth (still) of our team - success only in a sense that we can beat teams that we should be better than considering our talent level (and youth). That CAN carry over into next year.

San Jose State - a Must win, Absolutely at Boise State - Not likely OK at Rice - Perhaps, only if our offense can gel I’m with ya Louisiana Tech - Maybe No, probably a win at Fresno State - Not likely OK Tulsa - a Must win at home Yes, a win Nevada - Perhaps, only if our offense can gel Yes, their coach is 90 yrs old at UTEP - Perhaps, only if our offense can gel It may be our breakout game for 2005 [/i]
Don't know how anyone can think this group will be able to find 4 wins on the remaining schedule. These 1st 3 games have taken a tremendous toll injury wise. Just don't throw in the towel if we lose to San Jose. At this point, I'm just hoping there's enough healthy bodies left to break this recod losing streak before the season ends.
Re:
There are 2 very winnable games, maybe 3. Can the ponies go 2-4 with the other six? I think they can. But, 3-5 might be more realistic considering the injuries. Courage.
Again a litle realism:
SJSU--toss up, but not likely since we can't score. Boise--not in a million years Rice--no way. they have beaten Houston and Hawaii already. La Tech--Unlikely at best. They are not any good and we are worse. Fresno--not in a million years TU--no. much better than us. Loss to OSU was respectable. Navy was understandable. Don't underrate them. They will handle us. Nevada--truly a pathetic team also. We have a shot. UTEP--not likely. Hung tough against Boise. In 2-3 years will be the surprise team of C-USA. So SJSU, Nevada and UTEP are the only "realistic" possibilities, with SJSU and Nevada the best shots. Unless we suddenly become a scoring machine I wouldn't count on any of them.
We won't win any games unless this team can start scoring some points. Right now, the "Burns" offense is not even scoring 7 points per game and the "Bennett & Gush" defense is giving up over 40 points per game. Even UTEP put up over 30 on Boise St last night and Rice put up 41 on Hawaii. I am not sure what division Morgan State is, but San Jose put up 47 on them last night.
As I see it, San Jose, Nevada and UTEP are beatable. Not sure things, by any stretch of the imagination, but possibilities. Rice and LaTech and Tulsa, with some serious luck .... maaaaaaybe. If we win 2 or 3 the rest of the way, Cash Birdwell and the training/medical staff deserve raises. The injury list is getting out of hand for a team with our lack of depth.
Now more than ever, this team needs our support. Be at every game - start to finish - and let the guys know how much we appreciate all their effort. BE LOUD.
Re:
Realize we won't be playing that offense for the first time against Big12 competition, either. We have 3 games under our belt, we moved the ball somewhat against OSU (fumbles and INTs via missed catches killed us). I think we will be able to move the ball against lesser teams.
This team needs to figure out who the quarterback is going to be before you will see any points consistently put on the board. Quarterback by committee does not work and never will. However, we have to have a quarterback that can consistently move the team down the field without making mistakes! I still don't understand why Phillips wasn't redshirted this year given his lack of experience and the fact that we brought in two JC guys this year. Phillips has a lot of potential, but he has yet to move this team down the field for ONE touchdown this year! Redshirting him would have been the smart move, but its too late now. (I still don't understand why Meeks left last year given the uncertainties surrounding the quarterback situation on this team. If anyone can give some insight into the reason for his defection, it would be greatly appreciated!) If Phillips doesn't show up for San Jose, I would say it is time to let one of the other guys to give it a shot and let him learn from the bench!
2 wins or lessSort of a major change at QB, SMU will be lucky to win even two games this year. We might even go winless again. The problem is an internal one when you are 0-15.

Re:
CO81 - I agree with your assessment based on the season so far. UTEP appears tougher now as they made a run at Boise. Nevada seems more possible based on their performances. Tulsa appears solid as does Rice. But of these two and La. Tech, who knows, we could steal one. Right now I would have to guess that 3 wins looks like the best we can do and we should be happy with that given our injuries. Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
Why does Tulsa look solid. They lost by 28 to Navy? Wasn't that game in Tulsa. Tulsa record last year was built by playing an INCREDIBLY soft schedule with about 5-6 teams in the Bottom 20 or so in college FB. I think they beat Texas St, Ark. St, SMU, UTEP and San Jose and the School of the Blind. WoW!.
didn't Tulsa hang with Oklahoma State this year? I know they lost, but the score of that game was much closer than any game we have played against OSU.

On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney? Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.
Additionally, from the scoreboard it doesn't look as though we have faced tough defenses yet this year....Tech allowed 13 against us...20 something against New Mexico, and 35 against TCU. TCU has allowed 40 someodd against Northwestern, 0 against us and 70 to Texas Tech. Oklahoma State allowed 20 to UCLA, 21 to Tulsa and 7 to us. I don't see any winnable games until we start seeing more payoff from our "newfound ability" to move the ball. The teams coming up may not be as good (except for Fresno and Boise) but with our injury situation on defense there will be no way we can shut someone out, and right now that is what we would have to do to win. I'll be at the game this weekend, praying for a win, but I don't see it happening.
