Hmm-UT already has a 5 game series with Notre Dame and a 2 game series with USC which doesn't start until 2017. I know Texas also has a home and home series scheduled to start very soon with BYU. But you could see mutual interest in those teams scheduling each other. Throw in Oklahoma, maybe Tech to continue in state rivalry and I really don't think Texas will have much problem filling up the rest of the lightweight part of their schedule if they go independent.

Why would ND do this? Notre Dame already has their own deal with the BCS. They have fans from Coast to Coast. UT doesn't have the same following. They have a large following, but not like ND. ND has their own deal with the BCS. Depending on how many cable networks carry the LHN there is no reason for UT to get the same deal. What I am getting at: How would this benefit ND?

Unless UT wants to part with a great deal of their new found ESPN money there is no benefit to ND.

If they create a core of ND, UT and BYU, they have two schools with national fan base combined the UT. From there you could cheery pick Big XII, i.e. OU, get all the service academies (great fan bases) and/or religious universities, such as SMU, Baylor, Wake Forest, BC, etc.

You might see something like a core of 4-5 Top National Universities playing each other-then each school might play local rivalries, then each school will play 4 powder-puff home games to fill out schedule. 8-9 Home Games every year to control their TV Contract which will be very financially lucrative.I seriously doubt that UT would recreate a round-robbin traditional conference. Texas might play Tech every year-ND wouldn't. Notre Dame would play Purdue or Michigan St instead.

These are all good points. But at some point UT fans will lose some level of enthusiasm--even playing home and home against BYU, ND, and USC. Balancing out their schedule with NTU, Rice, UTSA, Fl Atlantic, can't complete with OU, A&M, Nebraska, KSU, with overlapping fan bases, short commutes to away games, etc. and what happens in years they go 1-2 or 0-3 against those teams? It takes an opponent and a traditonal rivaly to get fans to Pony Up $5,000 per seat option and feel happy about it. Rivalries are what college football is all about. The NFL tries to create them for TV, but the real rivalies are at the college level--where the guys in the next offices went to a school you dispise. When was the last time you saw a Cowboy fan and an Eagle fan arguing at the water cooler at your office?

They will have rivalries just like ND does. Tech, OU probably A&M and in this scenario ND and BYU-perhaps a program like USC and then whoever else wants to get their [deleted] kicked in playing in Austin every year. Schools like Baylor, SMU, Rice or whoever

You realy believe A&M or OU will continue to play them? It will be just like Texas playing Nebraska--not in my lifetime.

Of note, the ND athletic direct made overtures last year to form an alliance (not conference) of private universities with SMU being including. The idea went nowhere and has since been abandoned.
