If this all does go down, maybe SMU can sell themselves with high upside potential. I don't believe UH has the upside as SMU, of course I am bias. We also need butts in the seats for Fball and Bball home games.

If Houston ever gets their [deleted] together and builds a top notch football facility they could be a powerhouse just like they were in the 70s-mid 80s and then again in the 1990s. They are sitting on a recruiting goldmine with low academkic standards and minority athletes have an environment they feel comfortable in. You put them on a equal recruiting plane and I would expect them to do it again. They were pretty damn competitive in the 15-20 years before the SWC broke up.

Same could be said for us Stallion. Great recruiting base, seriously bigtime alumni, topnotch facilities, and a history of winning (even if it is stained). No reason we couldn't be successful.
Back off Warchild seriously.

just to follow up-UH had 8 Eight+ winning seasons and 4 SWC Championships in about 20 years without a decent on campus football facility and building that program from scratch

I agree-I always have agreed once the handcuffs came off. Alumni is actually a BIG NEGATIVE though. Forget about busing a bunch of 10 years olds to games-SMU's problem is lazy alumni who don't put their butts in seats in a tiny stadium. SMU alumni will not buy their way in the BCS-that's not how it works

ut hated uofh for what they considered unerhanded recruiting tactics. remember ut does not like to lose, especially to a school they consider to be their inferior. i would be surprised if they were behind uofh getting in.
we are probably the most attractive texas school but that doesn't mean they will take us. it would not surprise me to see the big 12 go after air force. byu may like it where they are compared to a big 12 that is going to implode.

I would think if it came down to cash, we would be able to round that up rather quickly.
Unfortunately, this all is happening two years too soon for us.
Both football and bball finally seem to have their acts together for the first time in a while. But it's hard to sell potential vs. reality at this moment.
It makes me sick that UH could jump into a BCS conference and we wouldn't.
This is the equivalent of the college athletics rapture, and we're about to be left behind for our past sins.

The scary thing is that if we are left out this time there won't be a next time.

It would be great if this could be postponed until after 2012. On the other hand, that hope could be pointless if there's any truth to the rumor that JJ is itching to leave after this season...

I don't agree...with this mix master approach to alignment there will be a next time.
However, we do have alot to offer--now. SMU is institutional name people are starting to remember. Second, we have a very good AD, who has been quietly playing the game, not appearing on twitter or facebook or making other prospective schools or SMU look silly; we obviously play by the recruiting rules (now) and have academic standards for our athletes; we have good academics and a good solid financial footing (something we didn't have even in the 70's). I do think the word "potential" is appropriate. We are just getting to the position where we are competitive--fight for the title, certainly not yet, but gaining ground and we would upset someone in the Big 12 this year, maybe not UT, OU, OSU, but someone.
Whose says we couldn't be the USC of Texas? Sometimes when you are trying to maintain a conference, perception is more important than reality and June and Steve are certainly building a story or facination about the program.
As Oddball once said, "Hey, whats with all those negative waves?"

No conference is going to make a decision whether to invite SMU based on whether JJ is the coach. Inviting SMU because JJ was the coach would be ridiculous since he could leave any time.

What is this rumor about JJ itching to leave? Where did this bombshell come from?
