Operation Sell Out

Aside from working on the Morgan Campaign and other responsibilities with the Mustang Club, I am also working on Sell Out Stampede. We are starting small and trying to sell out two games, UTEP and UCF.

The way this works is you make a contribution to the Mustang Club, a 501(c)3, for an allotment of tickets (in groups of 25, 50, 100, or more at $10/piece). The MC will use its vast network of community resources to distribute to area schools, youth groups, and churches.

I think this is an awesome cause. It's good for SMU and the Mustang Club. It's great for local kids that get to go to a college football game. It develops the brand for SMU in Dallas. The team gets a full crowd cheering them on in our first home game and a major conference rival. You get a tax deductible contribution to a 501(c)3. Fans watching these games (including a nationally televised game) get to see a full crowd in our stadium. And you, as a season ticket holder (I hope), get to experience another full crowd - how awesome was the TCU game last year? I can't wait.

Please remember that there is also an SMU Community Relations program sponsored by the Athletic Department wherein you buy season's tickets which are then used to bring various boys and girls club type groups from the inner-city to the campus for a lunch, tour and game. Again, you get a 501 (c) 3 deduction and it has a very positive impact on the kids and SMU's relations with the Dallas community. Many of us who live too distant to attend many games use this program as a means of supporting the football and basketball programs and insuring the season's ticket sales are more robust. Obviously, the season's tickets cost considerably more than the above program; however, you get a bigger tax deduction in return. Give consideration to this season's tickets program as another way of supporting the efforts of the Athletic Department and indirectly the Mustang Club.

This is a great idea, but I think a lot of people probably remember participating in these in recent years only to see a decided lack of success in actually getting people onto those buses and to the games. I am sure there are some old threads around here someplace talking about the fact that the game was sold out but the people were not there.

Could you share with us some of the lessons learned from the prior experience that are going to be applied to make this effort actually succeed in getting youth into the buses and into the games? It might make people even more interested in pitching in.

I appreciate the effort, just would like to hear more.

I would hope the difference is rather than collecting money to hire 50 buses and then trying to find kids to fill them, that they will find 1,000 kids and then find buses to haul them.

dont know. just relaying what I was told. 40-50 passenger buses, with 16 or 17 kids aboard, wasnt cost effective. Maybe in the last week, ten days, they've changed it up. This aint a deposition.

2ndandlong posts a detailed announcement about a fundraising initiative and you come along and say it isn't happening based on something you heard a week or 10 days ago. Nice.

To be honest, I used bussing them in liberally, not literally. I will edit my initial post. The program officially kicks off tomorrow. I have had a number of communications with individuals running this committee, but I have not actually sat down and worked through every detail on how they will be transported to the stadium.

We have a meeting in the morning, and I will hopefully be armed with much better information after that.

I can tell you that the administration shares your frustration on attendance with the previous programs, and, in the kick off email I got from members of the Athletic Department, they said, "A key part of our strategy is 'butts in seats,'" and I am supposed to hear more about how at an upcoming meeting. I wish I could be more helpful in answering your questions right now, but I ambitiously posted this to start chatter about the topic.
