Here are my thoughts if A&M joins the SEC:
1) Beebe is a joke and should be impeached immediately. He's a begger, a yes man and possesses little to no influence over the remaining schools, esp Texas.
2) Texas will go independent.
3) With 8 teams remaining in the Big 12 after Texas (indy) and A&M leave, and a potential for 4 16-team superconfernces looming in the future, the Big 12 must get ahead of the curve (and Larry Scott) and begin building, for now, a 14-team conference before Missouri/Oklahoma bolt. Here's my opinion on how a potential Big 14 could play out:
North Division Boise State Brigham Young Iowa State Kansas Kansas State Missouri
South Division Baylor Houston Oklahoma Oklahoma State SMU Texas Tech
SMU, Houston, Boise and BYU bring with them:
1. A decent geographical fit in the Big 14 2. The 5th, 10th, 112th, and 33rd ranked TV markets, respectively 3. Decent reputation for academics . For example: Law School Rankings give or take (SMU-50th, BYU-42nd, Houston-56th); MBA School Rankings give or take (SMU-57th, BYU-32nd)...too lazy to look up the rest. 4. Decent Alumni Base 5. Decent Home Attendance that could improve give the confernce affiliation (SMU-20K+, Houston-30K?, BYU-65K+, Boise-40K?)

you need to think 3 steps ahead. Many of thos schools would never sit pat. Big East has a chance for a complete 12 or 14 team Football Basketball Conference by adding Missouri, K-State and Kansas. They will drop the Private BB schools if they have to. Oklahoma is gone somewhere-nit sure where but they are gone too. Oklahoma St will try to follow OU. There might be something left actually positive for SMU but it won't look like that

I do agree that they must look ahead 3, 4, 5 steps. It's for that reason that I think the big 12 has to act fast and try to lock something down if A&M leaves. I'm nervous the Big East and Big10 will poach, decimating the Big 12 like the SWC. But I'm a traditionalist and enjoy regional matchups and geographical rivalries. I hope they can keep something together and have SMU be a part.

Stallion, since I live in BE territory, I have to disagree with you analysis that they would dump the basketball private schools to make a deal with KU, KSU, and MO. Remember you are talking about the NYC, Providence, Philly, DC, and ND markets for basketball which they dominate. ND, Seton Hall, Syracuse, St. John's, Nova and Georgetown built the BE brand. Pitt and WVA helped, but the brand was built on hoops not football. Basketball TV revenue is 75% of their total TV revenues. Also, Syracuse would probably jump to the ACC as they wanted to do earlier if such a move was made, thus elevating the ACC brand. KU would be a good get for the BE but they'd also have KSU as their spouse that would have to come along. Yes, football may divide from the hoops BE, but they would have to find the dollars to make up for the lost revenues by really getting some great football teams with big TV markets that they can deliver. Not a lot of those teams out there to get.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

I agree that the BE was built as a basketball conference of private colleges. Basketball is still the controlling factor in BE thinking with football floundering the past 10 years. The move of BC, Va Tech and Miami to the ACC cut the legs out of football and the BE has yet to stabilize that side of the house with WV being the last good team more than 4 years ago. I think the BE basketball has started to become unwieldy because of the number of schools and would guess there is concern for any more expansion. The move to add TCU makes no sense to me from the stand point of all the minor sports (costs, travel, distance) and their basketball program was viewed as a perenial bottom feeder leaving football as the only team elevating the needs of the conference. I think that the BE will realize that adding TCU was a mistake and within 5 years will try to slightly downsize back to their roots, cut costs and ensure regional rivalries with emphasis on basketball. I think they will accept football in the context of a good viable BCS conference that understands that it cannot compete with the big power conferences as there is simply not enough football talent in the NE and NC ( interscholastic leagues restrict all spring training and 7 on 7 ) to supply the football programs with the quantity of depth to sustain top 25.
