This appeared a few weeks ago in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (after Colorado beat Texas in the Big 12 title game), courtesy of Randy Galloway:
"Like, did Mack play the wrong quarterback all season? Or at least did he in Dallas County, where the Longhorns lost the two games that defined the entire year? Major Applewhite was the orangeheaded people's choice anyway, but he reconfirmed that with his bullpen performance Saturday night.
And then there will be the critics, those who once again will pile on Mack with reminders that padding the record against pushovers is not acceptable when there is continued failure in those few critical encounters that each season brings.
This loss, of course, amounted to a total disaster for Brown. It was his worst yet in Austin. Just think, Mack was on the verge of being forgiven for the Oklahoma thing in the Cotton Bowl two months ago. But the Buffaloes, who converted an incredible four first-half touchdowns off an incredible four Simms turnovers, brought back the theory that Mack is a great recruiter and a marginal coach.
In 18 years at four schools, Brown remains without a conference title. And to continue that goose egg, it took losing Saturday night to a team the Longhorns had defeated 41-7 earlier in the year. Here Mack was, with everything going his way, including Texas Stadium packed with 80-percent orange-shirted backers, and a Florida loss to Tennessee providing all the incentive his team would seem to need.
Oh, well. Give it a couple of months and Mack's Christmas will arrive. His stocking will again be stuffed with the finest schoolboy recruits in the land, and all orangeheads will rejoice in anticipation of national glory returning to Austin like any season now.
"Coach February" is at his best on signing day. For four years, that's been Mack's salvation. Then, however, comes September. The season starts. And for Brown, the potential has yet to reach reality. After Saturday night, Mack will have to endure his biggest failure yet."
