From what I understand, the SEC needs A&M to vote to leave the Big XII so then the SEC can invite them, so it's not the SEC 'stealing' a team. The SEC extending an invite to a sitting member of the Big XII would trigger lawsuits according to internet chatter.

This may be legal posturing but there are numerous reports over the past year about A&M meeting with SEC officials to discuss an SEC invite. I am not sure how the SEC gets A&M without some type of legal backlash from the Big 12.

There's a strong chance I'd wet my pants laughing if I saw that come out.

From Twitter:

@PeteThamelNYT: A high ranking SEC official called today's statement a way to "tap the brakes" so the Texas A&M can "get its house in order."

Not technically, but Slive likely wouldn't make a move without everyone being on board. He likes unanimity in decisions, especially something of this magnitude. Apparently, South Carolina, UGA, and Florida will all veto a new school from a state that already has an SEC member- so that would presumably rule out Ga. Tech, Clemson, and FSU/Miami.

IMO the next logical member would be Virginia Tech if you're going to 14- solid football program, new TV markets, and they would fit in from an academic/institutional standpoint. But, UVa bent over backwards to get VT included in the ACC expansion back in 2003, and I don't know if VT could bolt and screw over UVa and the ACC from a political standpoint now.

there is no way this is going down this way. The SEC would allow Aggy to be the one to back out publicly if this was anything but posturing. This is such obvious legal posturing its laughable. If anything, this step just ensures that the Aggies aren't ever going back to the Big12. You really think they would say anything if the vote was really NO? Ask yourself why there would be a public comment from the meeting? No way they would embarrass A&M publicly like that without a handshake deal.

That's what all the Aggies think, too.

Sure they would if this wasn't supposed to get out the way it did.

Real vote or not, it was still no, and they flashed their fannies to the whole sport's nation. There was a better way to do this. For instance, have the board announce it was seeking to change conference affiliation or going independent and setting up an independent committee to discuss options including negotiate an exit with the Big 12. Let the legal, financial, and political chips begin to fall, then when and if the dust is ever settled, negotiate with the SEC.

The Aggies jumped the gun and got the SEC exposed to a legal suit that was unwarranted and embarassing. The SEC Presidents had no option but to vote no.

On the otherhand, maybe all the recruiting boards, ESPN and Fox Sports all tried to get ahead of a story that wasn't complete and blew this whole thing out of proportion. It was particularily silly that three other schools and two ofther conferences were mentioned and the Presidents of the universities had not idea what they were talking about.

Maybe I should stop getting my medical advice and legal work off the internet.
