Questions For Recruiting Guru

Postby 50's PONY » Tue Sep 21, 2004 10:09 am

Guru,
What is your opinion of Chandler Dane at Decatur and have you heard if SMU is recruiting him?
What is your opinion of Cameron Luke at Klein Oak? We have evidently offered him as a quarterback.
Thanks,

BTW Dane I think is shorter than 5-11-but the kid does throw a nice ball. Played on Andrew McKinney's Decatur team. He has all kinds of passing yards but I'd be shocked if he got a Division 1A offer.

(Sorry it's taken me a while to respond -- it's kind of a busy time of year in this business!)

For the record, I've never seen Dane or Luke play in person, but I have seen both play on film. (I also don't have their numbers for the early games this year, so these comments are based on last year and preseason reports. The film I've seen on Luke is at WR, so I've seen his speed and athleticism. Comments about his passing are based on reports compiled from practice.)

Chandler Dane is a terrific high school passer, but not surprisingly, some college coaches are concerned about his size. Most write-ups I've seen have him at 6-0, 190; I have him at 5-11, 185 (but maybe he's grown). Therefore, there are some colleges that will write him off immediately, no matter how productive he is, because they're after the 6-4, 220-pound QBs. However, there are short QBs who can play. Ty Detmer might be the ultimate case, but that was before coaches became obsessed with big quarterbacks. Iowa QB Drew Tate is listed at 6-0, 185, but when he came out of Bayton (Texas) Lee HS, I had him listed at 5-11, 180. So it can be done at that size, but a smaller QB has to be in the right system. From what I've been able to find, I think SMU is interested, but might not deem him big enough physically to offer him a scholarship. They might try to convince him to walk on, if he chooses to re-join former teammate Andrew McKinney at SMU.

With that said, Chandler Dane can play (he threw for 27 TDs and nearly 3,300 yards as a junior). He makes very good reads at the line and makes quick decisions. The other things that make him effective (aside from the talent around him, of course) are the fact that he is extremely accurate and has a very quick release -- his mechanics are very good, and he makes up for his lack of size by releasing the ball pretty high. He gets his feet set quickly on his drop-backs, maintains a solid balance in his stance and gets rid of the ball in a hurry. He's not going to beat a team by heaving 70-yarders downfield, because his arm strength is better than average, but not great. But his accuracy and touch on deeper passes are exceptional, and he throws on the run pretty well.

He needs to get stronger, and he needs to pick the right system. Given the chance, he'll be most effective in an offense that spreads the ball around (some offshoot of the "West Coast" offense) to multiple receivers with a bunch of short and mid-range passes.

Cameron Luke is a player whose potential I really like. Again, he might not be quite as big as listed. I have him at 6-1, 185. He runs well (4.5). Outside of that, he's a very different player from Dane. Whereas Dane relies on accuracy and touch to make up for size, Luke is a little less polished as a passer, but has a very strong arm. He's also new to the QB position - he played WR last year. So it's his raw tools that are being recruited now. No matter where he ends up, he probably will need to sit for at least 2 years before taking the field. He'll need extensive work with a college QB coach/offensive coordinator to refine his technique. I have no doubt he'll be able to pick up a college offense and run it once he does (by all accounts he's extremely bright and learns quickly), but there will be a growing process. You're basically recruiting for 2006 or 2007 with this guy. His athleticism/speed and reports about his arm strength remind me of a shorter Josh McCown. His WR background makes him appealing for a team that's not afraid to let the QB run, because he knows how to run, with good speed and good field vision. When he tweaks his throwing mechanics a little and gets more comfortable at the QB position, he has a chance to be pretty good.

Incidentally, Chandler Dane has a teammate at Decatur I also like: WR Brian Christian, who looks a lot like SMU's Rey Pellerin. I have Christian listed at 6-3, 185, 4.5. He caught 80-something passes last year, and had 14 TD catches -- he's Dane's favorite target. At 3A Decatur, Dane enjoys a size advantage against every DB who covers him, but that's going to happen everywhere -- CBs that size just don't exist. He runs precise routes and a
