Glynn Cheeks commits to AFA
Bad news. This likely really hurts our chances with Taiwan Johnson.

I hope he knows what he's getting in to...my brother went there and loved it but from the day he left, he barely saw us for the next four years (3 weeks off over winter break and 4 weeks off for summer). the military will be your new familyreddevil wrote:Bad news. Good luck to him.
Hope he can shoot - in the Air Force, the officers are the trigger-pullers.

I don't think we can fault this kid at all for choosing AFA it is however still surprising.

Re: Glynn Cheeks commits to AFA
Remember that he was getting paid, had all health benefits, a free education, 7 weeks of vacation and every minute at the academy counted toward a pension if he stayed 10 years beyond his committment. Not a bad deal to retire at 38 to 39 with a great degee and resume'.Alaric wrote:I hope he knows what he's getting in to...my brother went there and loved it but from the day he left, he barely saw us for the next four years (3 weeks off over winter break and 4 weeks off for summer). the military will be your new familyreddevil wrote:Bad news. I think it does absolutely nothing to SMU's chances of recruiting him. If SMU gets him, it will be because Jeff Reinbold created a tight relationship with him and did a better job against the others.reddevil wrote:Bad news. This likely really hurts our chances with Taiwan Johnson.
I think SMU is in it and will stay in it and can get him
When these kids say, "Well, he and I are a package deal,'' they are full of it most of the time.
Perfect example. There are 3 kids at San Antonio Sam Houston who are DI recruits. One is a DB, the other is a DE and the third is a OL. The DB told everybody in the spring that all 3 of them are going to same school together.
Riiiiiiight...
Well, that DB just committed to Arizona, the DE is one of the most highly rated recruits in the nation and can have his pick and the OL is just another OL with a couple of D1 offers.
Calm down.

Perhaps you are the one that needs to calm down. No one ever said they were a package deal. All that was said is that Cheeks going to AFA hurts our chances with Johnson. While recruits may not be a package deal, having friends that have already committed will make a school more attractive. Also, check out the posts from Mike Coppage, who also reports for Scout, he has referenced that Johnson will be easier to get if Cheeks is here, otherwise it will be very difficult to beat out Nebraska.

Re: Glynn Cheeks commits to AFA
That's Mike's analysis. I don't agree with it. What it's going to come down to is if Taiwan wants to leave South Texas to go to middle America and never step foot back in this state to play a game since Nebraska is now in the Big 10. He's going to be doing that for the next 4-5 years unless after the first 1-2 years, he gets homesick, realizes he made a bad choice and transfers.
It's a little easier for non-national (like Rivals 250 kids) kids to leave Texas and never come back than it is for the likes of Johnson. Typically, those types of kids will got out to of state when they know that school is going to be playing games here.
SMU is not out of this.

Re: Glynn Cheeks commits to AFA
From what I remember reading they did say they would have liked to have played together and SMU offered both to try to get a package deal but obvious now Johnson isn't going to Air Force. It will be a tough fight for Johnson but we are still in his top 5. I would not hold my breath on this on though IMO.

Re: Glynn Cheeks commits to AFA
Who are you to say Johnson shouldn't leave Texas and is going to get home sick if he does? Maybe the Kid wants to get out of Texas and expirence something new. Just because we all went to SMU/have a connection to SMU/Support SMU...doesn't mean it is the perfect fit for every kid in the country. It is stupid to say a kid made a bad choice or will be unhappy if he doesnt go to SMU.Mitch McConnell wrote:That's Mike's analysis. I don't agree with it. Nebraska fans are concerned that Arkansas will land him.
Hard to say where he's going to sign, but the added attraction of playing with Cheeks was a nice angle for SMU.
