Sir Troll,
While I deeply respect any SMU grad., I must say that your position is somewhat disappointing. However, I think some irrational negativity has also influenced your detractors.
Pony fans, have we gotten so beat down that we could not kick [deleted] in both football and baseball? I think having a baseball program would help bring in some two-sport stud recruit.
I think a lot of people on this board have begun to buy into the negative stuff in the DMN and on the Ticket. It is just sad that they do not have more faith in SMU.

Yeah, sunshine, I'm sure it has nothing to do with the abhorrent football for the last 15 years or the consistent mediocrity in men's hoops, just the influence of the media. Just what the flip has SMU athletics shown us in revenue sports to deserve our continued faith?

DennisSimonGuy,
I understand where you are coming from and appreciate the fact that you are able to disagree with me in a manner more civilized than many of our fellow posters (some of them, I often think, act like Tech fans). I also share your distaste for the Metroplex media scourges of the DMN and The Ticket (I especially disapprove of BaD radio's content).
I notice that you are in graduate school in New Haven, CT. I can only assume you're continuing your education at Yale University. It must be wonderful to attend the university that is truly "The Cadillac" of Ivy League football.
I, however, will most likely never earn anything more than a bachelor's degree. Therefore it's imperative to me that my only alma mater find the best solution for its athletic woes. I see that answer in Divison 3 football and a serious baseball and softball program. I'm afraid we must agree to disagree.
= SMU with a baseball program

in fact, SMU has operated a Division 3 program for years-heck they even played in a Division 3 facility-I say let's try actually competing at the Division 1A level on an even playing field for the first time. It's simply a matter of commitment. SMU is on a beautiful campus, with excellent academics, with a state of the art(albeit small) football facility sitting in the middle of a metroplex which produces more Division 1A Football prospects than anywhere in the US. There is no inherent rteason why SMU can not do at least what TCU has accomplished and compete with the best of the non-BCS schools in the nation-EXCEPT that the school and administration have not been willing to make the commitment and sacrifices that need to be made in order to allow the program to excell. It is as simple as that. Oh and BTW SMU has played its last baseball game. PERIOD.

Thank you! It's people like you, rich_alum, that show there is validity to my desires. I appreciate your sentiments. Together, we can start a revolution!

The last time we had a baseball team at SMU average attendance was about 4 not including the grounds crew and the announcer for KSMU. 10 if you included them. And then we were in the SWC and played UT, TCU, Rice, Baylor, A&M, UH, and Ark. UT did bring some baseball fans. But no, baseball was not well supported by SMU, students, fans, or alums, or the athletic department. They had to put a snow fence out in the outfield (one of those orange jobs) because they didn't actually get around to installing one before an opening game (during construction at Ownby) and they only put that in, because I noticed it and wrote a column in the DC about how dangerous it was for outfielders to run around construction equipment. I unfortunately agree with Stallion, baseball is gone forever from SMU unless Rich Alum ponies up about $400 Million. Thanks Title IX.

Amen to that. And kudos for mentioning college hoops, not that garbage the NBA passes off on us.
