Corso wrote:Actually, my understanding is that the current location of Westcott Field is one of a few possible locations for an indoor practice facility, with an indoor field running east/west across the north end of the current soccer field (closest to the garage) and an outdoor field south of that, between the IPF and Ford Stadium. The plan would call for the destruction of the current bleachers, of course, and probably would wipe out the first row or two of parking in the lot behind the freshman dorms, but who cares? There isn't enough parking, anyway. HP folks can get prepared for more cars on their streets.
Two problems with the posts listed here:
1 - The money might be available for the IPF, but you can't displace the soccer teams until money is raised for a new soccer facility. Don't think that has been raised yet, so even if you don't care about soccer, contributing and helping to raise money for that actually will accelerate the arrival of the IPF.
2 - If the new soccer facility has no track, where will the track team go? The way Dave Wollman has carried on coaching the women after the men's team was ripped away, producing competitive teams and champion athletes along the way, is nothing short of remarkable. I'd go so far as to say he is the best coach and most underappreciated athletics employee in the entire university. He and his staff and their athletes deserve a track facility (there also should be a men's track team, but that's a different argument for another time). So ... where would the track go?
Corso: You are correct on the east/west facility next to the Parking garage( normally the fields are north/south so they get equal sun during the day for growing purposes, etc, but when its IN-doors, who cares?)but most of the other options have not materialized for the IPF because of parking issues, safety, logistics and other assorted reasons. I hope the soccer team gets the funds, as that is probably right on the IPF movement at this time. AND you are also way correct on Wollman, as he is a track legend here that no one knows.

If Turner had any real interest in promoting SMU athletics he would have made changes long ago. It wasn't until JJ came here that things started to change and Turner is still not on the same page. I suspect that his commitment to top 25 is in lip service only. GO PONIES!!!

C'mon this is a major budget that includes pressures from all, not just Athletics, and requires much juggling on all financial fronts in difficult times. The University has experienced the most $ contributions in SMU's history by a long shot, and its because of Turner that we are here. He got there slower than we wanted and much of that could be blamed on weak AD's and weaker coaches that didn't demand what is necessary for success.

One word sums up Turner's real thoughts on athletics: Copeland.
If you want further evidence about Turner, I'll have to find the thread from a year or two ago that details his anti-athletics moves across his whole career. Actually anti-athletics isn't right.... he doesn't want to destory it, he just doesn't really care or value building it.

This is just a basic evolution of the fight for funds and college approvals as always, between well meaning academicians and the athletics department There are equally strong benefactors and educators that think that SMU is in way in over its head today on Athletic spending that bend Turners ear all the time. We are are just another mouth to feed on a big multi-headed beast. It takes strong personalities from coaches and athletic directors to make it happen by championing the cause (s) upstream at SMU.
But you guys don't believe Turner can change in life, or has changed his direction in his tenure here?

I think the people with the money above Turner have changed their direction or make up and Turner is following orders, but not enthusiastic or by his own wishes.

Misty. That was Johnny Mathis. Or perhaps Clint Eastwood in "Play Misty for Me".
