San Jose coach names starting QB

Saw this on the SJSU website:

Rogers named number-one quarterback
Dale Rogers will lead the offense against SMU.

San Jose, Calif.-----After two games of interchanging his top two quarterbacks, San Jose State University football coach Fitz Hill named fifth-year senior Dale Rogers as the team's number-one signal caller and the starter for the September 25 Western Athletic Conference opener against Southern Methodist University.

Rogers, a 6-foot-2, 239-pounder from Alta Loma, Calif., made his first major college start in San Jose State's most recent game, a 47-28 victory over Morgan State. He shared time at the position with redshirt freshman Adam Tafralis, who was the starter in the season opener at Stanford.

Heading into the SMU contest, Rogers has completed 83.3 percent of his passes for 230 yards and one touchdown. His passing efficiency rating of 177.58 would rank him seventh nationally among NCAA Division I-A passers if he had the minimum number of attempts. Rogers has thrown 24 passes in two games and 30 are needed for a national ranking.

" (Against Morgan State) Dale once again played very effectively. Tafralis did good things as well," said San Jose State coach Fitz Hill at his weekly press conference on September 20. "The first two games, Dale is 20-out-of-24 with two drops. He has a very high pass efficiency rating right now, executes very, very well and has not had a delay of game (penalty)."

Tafralis, just the fourth freshman in school history to start a game at quarterback, has completed 35.3 percent of his passes for 131 yards and a touchdown this season. Neither quarterback has thrown an interception in 2004.

Based on results so far this is not surprising. But it is odd that the 5th year senior has to beat out the freshman.

Unless that kid is a HS all-America QB, it is kind of surprising. You'd think Coach Hill would want him to sit and watch for a year.

Right, and look at the offense, even with one game againts a I-AA team their ranking is 64 in scoring, 76 in total offense but 20 in pass efficiency.

The average of our first three opponents is 11 in scoring, 19 in total offense and 29 in pass efficiency.

We should be able to slow them down.
