Winning and being in a position to play against teams that people have heard of is a great marketing ploy. I love CUSA compared to the WAC and the MWC, but people have heard of Kansas University, they haven't heard of Central Florida. They have heard of Texas Tech, but not UAB. I also think the BE is not going to be an attendance panacea for the Frogs. I don't think long term that Pitt, WVA, UConn, Rutgers, Louisville, USF, Cincy, and Syracuse are really going to draw fans to games. I remember games with WVA back when SMU was in the SWC and they drew hardly anyone. I think a price comparison for a family of four to an SMU game and a family of four to a Cowboy game might be in order.

"I think a price comparison for a family of four to an SMU game and a family of four to a Cowboy game might be in order." I have always wondered why we don't push this point more. You can buy tix for as little as $15 (just bought some for UTEP so I can take some friends), $20 to park, and you get a first-class, family-friendly atmosphere for a fraction of the cost of JerryWorld (or any number of other DFW area attractions). If we market that point, oh wait, marketing, that's where it falls apart.

And yes, there does need to be something done to combat the elitist feel that comes with SMU. When the Dallas Burn (now FC Dallas) wanted to use Ford for their games rather than the Cotton Bowl, the word was that Park Cities didn't want "those kinds of people" (read Mexicans, hate to say it, but that's what we're talking about) taking over the area on game days and the plan died. I think a lot of that attitude has tamed over the years, but the perception of it is as strong as ever. It will never completely go away (like it or not, we are a private university in one of the most upscale neighborhoods in the country), but there can be outreach to the greater Dallas area to see what we are about. I think once you get some folks on campus, they'll realize there are some really warm and welcoming folks around. And I am encouraged to hear that RGT and SO are reaching out to Dallas leaders to find ways to make that happen. Even though it is part of trying to get to BCS, the outreach itself is a step in the right direction regardless of how the Big XII conversation ends up.

Yes. A rapper on campus is the way to the "urban" people. :|

Sorry to say it, but the SMU product doesn't appeal to anyone outside of SMU. Black, white, hispanic, asian, or whatever. Game day atmosphere plays a big role on having people return and I think those things are created naturally. Rappers, soccer, or any other gimmick is not going to get people in and keep them in. The only thing that will change it is improvement in the athletic program and a change in our competition.

I think a lot of you need to actually get out and explore the full extent of the BLVD. There are multiple vendors selling food around the flagpole, bounce houses and games for kids, stages and plenty of places and activities for newbies, unattached fans and visiting fans. There's a whole area SE of the main quad where anyone can set up shot.

True, I rarely venture beyond the immediate area of our tailgate tent. It's a hike getting up to the main quad from where our tent is located. Plenty of eye candy everywhere on the The Boulevard "proper" so I don't see the need to venture out, especially when it seems pregame goes by so fast.

So what we really have is a communication issue. If the general public (and visiting fans) don't know there's an area of the Boulevard for people who don't have reserved tents (or invitations to one), it needs to be publicized better. But then we're back to that whole lack of a marketing dept. thing...

I've read on this board that we should "exploit mexicans" and get a raper on campus to appeal to the "urban community". Now the oriental comment.

Personal, I don't pretend to be politically correct and make fun of everyone so please don't take this as a slam on any poster. The difference in many cases is that I know what I say is offensive and just don't care.

Hope you mean a rapper. Do not need a raper on campus. :D

To be fair, does anyone really need a raper anywhere?

Perhaps on a blind date with Lorena Bobbit.

Marketing is the key. Look at what Russ Potts did with his Mustang Mania campaign. Why not say to the family of four buy to adult tickets and get two children's ticket's free? That makes it a $30 day for the family of four. Why not say that you can bring in your own food, (but no booze)? Or buy one season ticket and get one free. Lots of promo's that appeal to the middle income American. Remember, Price, Product, Packaging and Promotion. We beat the Cowboys on price, our product is fine for its level, the packaging needs a little work and we don't promote anything. You have to spend money to make money!

Eaststang- Amen. Market, market, market. The wins will bring excitement but unless people are aware of what we have they won't be in the stadium.
