Hoping for a good game - from an Aggie

Postby AgKJ » Mon Aug 29, 2011 7:38 pm

Howdy, Mustangs. Just wanted to drop by and wish everyone a good game, injury-free, and specifically those of you who are making the trip to Aggieland. I hope that you enjoy good Aggie hospitality - we're a very hospitable bunch, so hopefully you'll stop by a tailgate or two and be given free beer and good college football discussion.

I confess I know pretty much nothing about your team - usually the A&M websites have done a solid job of breaking down our opponent by now, but as you probably know, the dominant topic right now is SEC, SEC, SEC.

What can you tell me about your team in terms of strengths, weaknesses, players to watch, etc?

I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have about either our team or College Station stuff for those making the trip.

Thanks, and here's to a good game!

Thanks for the good sportsmanship! I'm really hoping for a injury free game as well. Because the morning after our game, SMU will have it's first CUSA game in only 5 days. See you at Kyle Field, Pony Up!

Thanks for the replies, guys.

NomAnor - I admire the "passion" you have for your team, ha. Every fan base has a certain % of individuals who choose to treat their opponents with poormanners. My guess is that number at SMU is VERY small. In my experience, Texas Tech has the absolute worst fans in terms of hospitality, class, etc while Nebraska has the best by a landslide. I've always used them as the standard.

Anyway, back to football. I'm one of the few Ags who isn't predicting a 12-0 season this year, ha. I guess I've been around A&M football too long and had my heart broken too often. Hell, it wasn't even 3 years ago that Arkansas State beat us.

While our offense should score lots of points, I'd like to see another solid season of defense (especially without Von Miller) before I'm convinced that the Wrecking Crew is truly back.

Our Achilles Heel for the past few years has been the pass, and my guess is that June Jones is still pass-happy. If so, I wouldn't be surprised if the game is close.

Other than confirming that your offense is pass-first, what can you tell me about your defense?

Thanks.

I think it's Sherman doing some last minute scouting.

I'm not Sherman. He calls "Aggies" "Eggies" due to the heavy Boston accent. So there's proof I'm not him since I didn't type it that way. ;)

NonAmor - my apologies, I thought you were being hostile.

Someone above said you play another game just FIVE days after ours - do you mean you play again on FRIDAY? And who do you play next? Yes, I could look it up but too lazy.

Our qb has to talk to June after every play and we don't like it.

Hey Ag, and thanks for the post.

At the expense of giving you something that resembles a real answer, we run a 3 - 4 defense with a very solid front 3, better than average LBs, good safeties, and potentially suspect corners. We lost last year's best cornerback (Sterling Moore) to the NFL this year. He was hurt several times last season and it was like 2 totally different defenses with him in (very good) and when he was injured (not so much). Hopefully, we will get consistent play back there this year and create more take-a-ways. I'm not sure we'll have an answer for Fuller, but it should be interesting to see how we approach it. My brother is a Horned Frog and my mom's husband an Ag (B.S., M.S. and Doctorate), so there is never any shortage of good natured smack talk in my house.

I've been to at least 10 or 15 aTm games at Kyle Field over the years, and while I am not a fan, I must admit to you being a mostly hospitable bunch as you state. Anytime a visitor can get a friendly game of 42 going at the Dixie Chicken, you know you are in good company. And, I must agree about the Tech fans; some of the worst ever.

Regarding the O, it's a little more balanced than most people assume for a June Jones offense. Zach Line had close to 1500 yards rushing last year and we seem to run the ball almost 40% of the time.

Welcome to the board and thanks for chiming in.
