SMU/A&M Roster Breakdown

Postby PonyPatrol » Fri Sep 02, 2011 9:14 pm

I was just checking out the SMU depth chart and was amazed at how much different our team looks on paper from previous years. When comparing the starters to the A&M starters, these two teams will LOOK awfully similar. For the first time in decades, we may be able to physically match up with a top ten team.

QB's: Both 6'4 (Padron with 10 pounds on Tannehill)
RB's: Line is 3 inches taller and 32 lbs bigger than Gray
WR's: Average SMU receiver (top 5) is 5'11, while average A&M receiver (top 5) is 6'1
OLines: Average SMU Olineman weighs 304, average A&M Olineman weighs 301
DLines: Average SMU weighs 291, average A&M weighs 293
Linebackers: SMU 230, A&M 228
Secondary: Average height of SMU is 5'11, average height of A&M is 5'11

I realize that A&M supposedly has a huge advantage in depth, but their two deep is littered with freshman, while we may have one or two. Our "lack" of depth, sure has the edge on experience, which may come in handy for a week 1 matchup...

What about the speed of players ? Which DL is quicker ? Which has quicker LBs ? Who has faster receivers,DBs, and what are the vertical leaps of the WRs and DBs ? Important issues to consider. I know a lot of these things about our players, but I can't tell you about aTm's.

I started doing some of these same comparisons last night and was pleasantly surprised that we essentially measure up to A&M. Yeah, Westex is right in that you have to consider their speed, athletic ability, intangibles, etc, and I know that if you went by star ratings coming out of high schoo, they probably average more than us. But if you did this same comparison when we last played them, we likely would have seen a huge gap, and we have closed that gap these last few years. We're heading in the right direction,f or sure.
