Our Defensive Coordinator

Postby SMU 86 » Mon Sep 05, 2011 9:19 am

I know everyone is talking about Coach Jones but should any responsibility be placed on Coach Mason?

We don't have the athletes to run a better scheme against A&M. Watch how we perform against the supposedly high-powered offenses in CUSA.

SMU has an outstanding Defensive Coordinator. There is no problem there that better, faster, stronger and bigger players can't solve

A&M didnt do anything amazing on offense. They mythodically moved down the field. I would have liked to see us make more stops but at least we didnt give up any big plays.

Those short throws to Swope were making him look like an all american. It took too long IMO for us to finally get someone out there on him.

So how did Boise State solve that same problem against Georgia.

I would argue that they are better at evaluating and developing talent than we are. They may wind up with a bunch of 2* and 3* like us, but they evaluate them better and get underrated players, whereas the ones we get are usually rated right. Then, when they get on campus, they develop them much better.

Not to mention that Boise competes better strength-wise and they don't seem to have any conditioning problems. We were on that path until Vic left. Mel DeLaura hasn't impressed me at all.

I think Del Laura has done a fine job (as we are noticeably bigger and stronger according to reports) but he has not been here that long. I wonder where all the "I trust the coaches in evaluating talent" people are now. I guess Boise has better talent evaluators.

Let me clarify: Mel is making a difference, but Vic was making more of a difference.

I seriously doubt there is a single poster on here that knows enough about Boise St recruiting/admissions to make an intelligent comment on how they do it. They don't recruit "in the vicinity" as Richard Pryor would say. I can tell you how TCU has been competitive against BCS competition

Those bubble or swing passes to Swope were there because, we were having to bring people into the box to help stop the run. Our front seven couldn't stop it. All they had to do was block the corner, and Swope was off and running.

I don't think it is fair to compare Boise or TCU to our team yet. They are the examples and th goal but remember we are only into year 4 and those teams are almost 15 years into having decided to try and be good at football. Also there is a big difference playing at the number 8 team in the country on there campus than an overated 6-7 SEC team away from there place (even if still in there state). It took JJ 7 years to get Hawaii into a BCS bowl, and really he is in year 3 1/2 (that first year is almost shouldn't count because you didn't do the recruiting. This team is actually a lot like his BCS hawaiiteam except we have a realy tough schedule and our QB is not accurate like colt

Don't have WRs like that 2007 Hawaii team either.
