DMN: McDermott will start for SMU against UTEP

Postby cutter » Tue Sep 06, 2011 11:18 am

"SMU coach June Jones will go with senior quarterback J.J. McDermott as the starter in Saturday's Conference USA opener against UTEP.

Jones said Kyle Padron, his starter for the last season and a half, will also likely play at some point during the game.

McDermott, who was inserted in Sunday's season opening loss at Texas A&M after Padron threw two quick interceptions, said he found out he would be the starter about five minutes before practice Tuesday morning. He took the first-team reps.

"J.J. was ready and he did a lot of good things in the game," Jones said. "We didn't protect him really well, and he still battled through it."

Padron declined comment, saying he had to get to class.

"I told him if you're a quarterback, it doesn't matter if it's in college or the National Football League, you better learn how to deal with adversity," Jones said. "He's handling it positively.""

He knows Kyle. I don't.

Likely both of them look impressive against UTEP. It's possible Plano East Senior High would look impressive against UTEP.

This reeks of playing head games with his best option at QB (for this year and next). I hope he knows what he's doing.

When Kyle gets on the field, he better light the damned place up! JJ deserves some recognition of his effort against the Aggies and should start, but I think this puts both QB's on notice that they had better have a handle of the offense by now or they will be spectators prety fast. I still think Kyle overall is the better of the two, and I hope he proves me right.

hate the move. Reaks of panic and headgames and casts a bigger cloud over the season than any loss to A&M. Its true that McDermott took care of the ball, fine, its also true that we laid an egg (no points) in the entire second half. We scored in the first half thanks to Z. Line gashing the defense for a little while, not the qb change. Why can't we stick with a qb for more than a season?

I don't like that the move had to be made, but it's the right move for now. Kyle was obviously rattled on Sunday and came out playing awful...JJ then stepped up and did a good job under the circumstances.

Hopefully KP will benefit from some time on the sidelines to both improve his understanding of the game and to give him some addition fire within.

I think we'll be ok with either one in place if our OL can protect them and our WRs make their catches. I don't think there is much difference in skill level or ability between the two.

I think while the aggie D-Line put unbelievable pressure on JJMcD, my biggest worry is he seems to have feet of stone in scrambling. KP is no Randall Cuningham, but he can move some. Any insiders know if JJMcD can actually run? Forward? With the ball?

The bad news is that we have a QB issue. The good news is we have 3 games against opponents that should allow us to clear up this issue. Having Lin and our O-line helps as it relieves some pressure on the passing game.

And to be clear, our D did dang near nothing to stop a$m or create turnovers. That has to improve as much if not more than the QB.

Reaks of panic and headgames

Panic, no. Headgames, absolutely, and they need to be played to a certain point. Kyle came into the season the assumed leader and starter and choked on a big-time stage. He needs to know that at this point in his career that a) those mistakes are no longer tolerable and b) Kyle needs to learn how to handle a little humility and adversity. I think McDermott will have a good series or two, then stall (just like he did Saturday), and Kyle will come in and find his groove again. Several people have noted that coach Jones knows which buttons to push, and this one should light a fire under Padron, at which point he will either take off or burn out. If the latter happens, at least we have a suitable replacement.

I seem to recall that KP started last year the same way, ie not real great; but, given his need for experience and the hope that he would continue to develop, JJ let him play out the year (except for the game that he was pulled for a few series). Now, with a full year of playing experience and another full off-season work, KP looks like he did at the start of last year (from appearances of his two series of play), which suggests that perhaps he is still not 'getting it' completely. That, to me, makes the JJMc move understandable.
From my vantage point of a sofa and a tv, it looked like JJ Mc was a lot more comfortable and poised in the pocket (not perfect, by any means) in comparison. And, he was fairly accurate on his throws (yeah, not super great, but pretty good). It looked like he was actually working through his progressions -- couldn't get that sense from KP.
Both qbs seem to need to work on moving around in the pocket better, while keeping their eyes downfield, I think.
I hope they both continue to develop and end up playing great the rest of the year. If it's KP, then great; if it's JJMc, that's great too, and perhaps KP still learns a bunch to make the jump next year.

I liked how he actually would go through the progression of WRs and even utilized the shovel pass on a couple of occasions.

KP seems to have trouble with going through his progressions (as many have noted). I think that some time on the sidelines will be helpful for him. It would not surprise me to see him starting again by the TCU game if he is the competitor I think he can be.

McDermott to start Saturday against UTEP

Postby PonyPride » Tue Sep 06, 2011 12:01 pm

SMU head coach June Jones said after Tuesday's practice that senior J.J. McDermott will make his first start at quarterback for the Mustangs Saturday when SMU hosts UTEP in its home opener.

"They both will play," Jones said, "but J.J. will start."

Padron started Saturday's loss to Texas A&M but was pulled after just four passes; two were complete, but two were intercepted. McDermott entered and completed 21 of 34 passes for 254 yards and a touchdown.

Jones said he told Padron to use the situation as a learning opportunity.

"I told him," Jones said, "that if you're a quarterback — it doesn't matter if you're in college or in the National Football League — you have to learn to deal with adversity."

Backup players often say they prepare for each game as if they are going to start. McDermott, who said he learned "about five minutes before practice" that he would start Saturday's home opener, said nothing has changed in his practice routine.

"Practice is practice," he said.

McDermott said he had not yet watched film of his performance against the Aggies, although he was headed to the coaches' offices to do so after practice.

"I could have played better," he said. "Most of all, I'm disappointed about us getting our butts beat. I'll know more after watching the film."

Jones he likes McDermott's accuracy, and said that Saturday's performance against the Aggies gave him a better idea of what he has in McDermott.

"I have always said this: you can't evaluate a quarterback until you put him in a game," Jones said. "He did some good things (against Texas A&M), and he'll start Saturday."

For McDermott, Saturday's Conference USA opener marks the reaching of a goal he has had since he transferred from New Mexico State before the 2009 season.

"I'm just excited about the opportunity," he said. "What else is there to say? (Starting) is what I came here for — now I'm getting the opportunity."
