Re: McDermott to start Saturday against UTEPWhat...the....funk.....
Good lord this is a ballsy maneuver but i'm not going to pretend like I know more about the situation than JJ. This seems like utter craziness.
Re: McDermott to start Saturday against UTEPI just don't see what starting McDermott gets us in the long run. He's not going to be here next year. From all reports, there's no one threatening to jump up the depth chart who is behind KP. So we start JJMcD this year and KP next year? Why?
McDermott to start Saturday against UTEPI have to say JJMcD looked more like he wad running the offense than Padron, and has a lot of zip on the ball. I'd like to see if we can run a RnS with him. We haven't done it with Padron.

Re: McDermott to start Saturday against UTEP
It is just one game and KP is expected to play. Players need to earn starting spots. I think this is good for now and will work itself out. ![]() Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
Re: McDermott to start Saturday against UTEP
In the long run it could wake Padron up and get his mind right. If something like this breaks him then he's not the guy to lead us anywhere significant. Jones benched Chang a few times during his career for ineffectiveness and things eventually worked out there. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: McDermott to start Saturday against UTEPJJ will put up points and is a good qb. We need to get behind him and support him. Pony Up!
Re: McDermott to start Saturday against UTEP
Oh you are talking about in 08 at Ford when he threw it to the de right in front of him. I had forgotten about that. I was referring to 09 when he threw it straight to a TCU lb near the sideline
Re: DMN: McDermott will start for SMU against UTEP
NEVER underestimate an opponent
Re: DMN: McDermott will start for SMU against UTEPPanic, no. Headgames, absolutely, and they need to be played to a certain point. Kyle came into the season the assumed leader and starter and choked on a big-time stage. He needs to know that at this point in his career that a) those mistakes are no longer tolerable and b) Kyle needs to learn how to handle a little humility and adversity. I think McDermott will have a good series or two, then stall (just like he did Saturday), and Kyle will come in and find his groove again. Several people have noted that coach Jones knows which buttons to push, and this one should light a fire under Padron, at which point he will either take off or burn out. If the latter happens, at least we have a suitable replacement.
Yeah, he's gonna take off alright, right to another school. We've seen this act before...Chris Sanders/Josh McCown/Bo Levi Mitchell...which by the way, anyone see BLM's numbers for E Washington over the weekend? All these guys left SMU and promptly lit it up for their new schools. It's a vicious cycle.
Padron wouldn't have any eligibility at a D-1 school. Could play a year at FCS
Actually, Padron was thrown in as a true FR so he could take a RS year with a transfer and have one year at the FBS level, but why bother? Let's see what he's made of. If he's the competitor we think he is, he'll work hard and wait for his opportunity to win the job back,
Re: McDermott to start Saturday against UTEPlooks to me like all this means is that we have QB #1 and # 1A
I expect McDermott gets the chance to show what he can do but if he doesn't perform and put points on the board, we will see Padron back in the game pretty quickly Jones might have the luxury of going with the "hot hand" for at least these next 2 games

Re: McDermott to start Saturday against UTEPThis change might also be a wake up call to all of the starters- either play up to or above your potential and do things right or watch from the bench. We are rapidly getting to the point where we have some depth and can afford to alternate a player if he is not performing up to par.
GO PONIES!!!
Re: McDermott to start Saturday against UTEPJJ McDermott is ready, focus, determined, and hungry as a bear. He has dedicated himself to learning this offense since day one and he knows the system better than anyone else we have at QB. This kid is going to make some defenses run themselves ragged. If the defense could have played better, forced a turnover or two, JJMcD would have taken care of some business at Kyle Field.
How do I know this? One of JJMcD's former teammates told me all about this kid's fire and work ethic during the game on Saturday. Get ready to watch some fireworks, people. Flounder out. Larry Brown? We have Larry Brown? Cool!
Re: McDermott to start Saturday against UTEPWith the exception of a stellar game against Nevada, who did not put any pressure on Padron, Padron has always looked rattled to me. Against a good rush he withers and panics. He should never have thrown the ball on the first interception on Sunday and he went downhill from there. In looking back upon the teams that really pressured him, TCU last year for one, he never looked at all composed. I think the "high powered" offense everyone refers to at this time is a myth because Padron just melts when under pressure. Having said all this, I think McDermott responded extremely well and showed great composure under duress; and, he knows the system. I applaud JJ for making the move. I think this move is overdue
