The SMU Boise Game

Postby crazy horse » Tue Sep 28, 2004 12:34 pm

I missed the Boise State game last year, but what I remember of it we held their running game in check (something like a 2.2 avg 80 yds), but got blistered for over 500 passing yards. Is our pass rush and DBs up to the challenge this year?

A couple of statistical tidbits:
Boise's opponents this year are a combined 3-12 - SMUs (9-5)
Boise has turned the ball over 10 times, and has a -2 takeaway for the year - SMU 11 (-11)
Boise has produced over 500 yards of total offense a year - SMU just under 300
Boise scores almost 50 points a game and gives up nearly 25 - SMU 14 and its opponents 35.
Boise gives up almost 350 yards per game - SMU 460

And now the million dollar question. The offense that I saw on Saturday was very encouraging. Was San Jose that bad, or was SMU actually showing signs of life? And which defense will arrive in Boise, the one that played against Tech and SJSU or the one that was at Stillwater and Ft Worth?

The one in Stillwater actually wasn't that bad. They just didn't finish. Had they held on to balls, not turned it over, and executed (i.e. eliminated unforced errors), we all would have been more pleased. Suffice it to say, OSU's d is probably better than BSU. Combine this with improvement last weekend, and I think we have some reason to be hopeful.

I agree we were able to move the ball get first downs in every game we played. It's the 11 turnovers in the first three games that killed us and kept us out of the endzone. It sure beats last years 3 dives and a punt.
