A. Coach Jones doesn't have a mascot. He lent his name and support to a program designed to save animals from being killed, and having two of them at football games brings some level of visibility to it.
B. The band, like the cheerleaders, poms, the Manada Wranglers of yesteryear and other organizations exist to support the school, its athletic department and the teams ... yet you choose to not play for the team because of your hangup over Coach Jones' charity project? That's embarrassing.
C. As long as Coach Jones is here — and considering how much more fun the back-to-back bowls have been than the 20-plus bowl-less seasons they followed, I hope it's a hell of a long time — the Mustangs aren't going anywhere. We might even see the stupid black jerseys again. Get over it. We all love Peruna and recognize him as the official mascot, but you don't play for mascots and you don't play for laundry. You play for the team and the fans.

There are 15 coaches who would love to make 2.75 mil a year, that would embrace the traditions and get us to back to back bowls....

JJ was the right guy at the time, but lets not over-inflate the guy...he gets everything he wants and we are still wanting to give him more...

Are you suggesting he shouldn't have an indoor practice facility, a larger recruiting budget, a marketing department to help sell his team to the community?

Yeah, that would be over-the-top. Those things certainly don't help at other schools.

The recruiting budget is enormous, biggest non bcs budget in country....

IPF has already been secrued but JJ will have to wait for Past president GWB and new dorms to get done before he gets his IPF.....Deal with it or use HPs, the 2 other things will bring more income to the school than the football team will ever....

The marketing is an issue, but I have had meetings with people from Cox, orsini's office, alumni chairs ect...None of these people are innovative at all...Its another case of being told no and giving up instead of coming up with some great concepts....I had fed these guys concepts and they smile and say what a great idea it is and then go " but we really just need money...."Save it times are tough get creative...

Any other comments horsepower....

I dont want a lot of coaches that have been to BCS games....Coker, ect...

I want someone who has a fire to build something great and sustainable....Build a program not a team...dont dream about hawaii in 4 years...dream about dallas and SMU in 10...becoming TCU or USC of you region....

We can do it, stop thinking small....We are the premier University in the fastest growing area in the country....start acting like it...

That's true, but Steve-O talks about being top-25 in everything we do, right? Our recruiting budget might be bigger than those of other non-BCS teams, but Coach Jones is here to make us competitive with the best, right?

Delay or no delay, we have had practices washed out by rain and rendered virtually useless by extreme cold. It is no secret that an IPF will help.

The lack of marketing is inexcusable. If $3 million can be raised to put a neon Mustang on the ceiling of the locker room, the money can be found to let Dallas know we have a good team playing games that are worth watching.

Honestly, you both have good points on this.

Recruiting budget is bigger than some BCS schools...This is a hawaii argument where he had 50k and could fly off island to visit...He did pretty well with that, maybe he was passionate about it...

IPF again is us deciding not to be innovative, HP has a fantastic venue, build relationships and lease some time...

The marketing is concerning but when life gives you lemons, make lemonade....we sit on the corner and beg for more lemons...

I really wish people would stop using the Top 25 in everything in a non-sarcastic manner. All Steve O cares about is being top 25 in football.

Also, they could certainly use the money they wasted on those ridiculous pants without stripes to put towards a marketing department. The cost of the pants alone would probably pay for at least one full-time marketing employee, and would have avoided SMU looking like crap on the field (in presentation - no comment on the performance).

Traumadoc wrote:So GottaLuvthe Band8386 you are right. 'Lets do it for the kids" we have a chance to change things and show our appreciation for the coaches and the team. The Pony Walk is only 10 minutes of everyone's time. Come play, cheer and honor the effort of the 'kids" Lets not argue. I bet 8386 you could get this done because I saw the passion in you for the band.

Yes lets not argue on something that you started.
Yes either band will play rain (to a reasonable extent) or shine, win or lose that isn't an issue.
The alumni band just needs to be asked in advance so we know where to be and when. As it should be stated for clarity we are all alumni and can have ties elsewhere or maybe taking other tents or shopping stalls. I am in the AB and to my knowledge we weren't approached, but again I'm not a spokesman, you'd have to talk to the head people. Talk to anyone in the alumni band and they can point you to the directors or someone in charge.

I know that this thread won't die easily because everyone has an opinion on everything and people being part of some group doesn't speak for the whole group and vice versa.
So all the real mascot jazz and what not comes down to personal feeling and not on topic of the thread.
All the talk about ego is bullcrud. Ego plays into everything everyone does on some level. Since most likely Tdoc is a parent, we'll use that as an example. As a parent you would do whatever you can to help your child that is hopefully obvious, but doesn't if feel nice every once in a while to be thanked by said child in some form or another? It doesn't have to be a big public thank your or with money, simply a nod, smile, a wave, etc can be worth it. There is no question that I will keep playing as long as I am able to, but appreciation for efforts go a long way. Either band can attest to this. For the alumni band playing good music on parts of the boulevard to people that want nothing to do with you to move on or other parts where crowds gather and cheer and wait for you to play. The current band has the students actually joining in with the band on cheers and that dance thing in the fourth quarter where as back in the day they would sit on their hands and twiddle their thumbs and leave at halftime. It is a better atmosphere when people do things together. In the stadium I've seen definite steps to a better crowd overall. On the boulevard there are lesser changes. Since most people during the "pony walk" stay by their tents I still don't see why the AB got singled out. I'm sure this will be fixed in time but I will pose this question as well.
Why don't you also get people from the other tents to come out as well?
Since this thread has obviously focused on the alumni band and that topic has been beaten every which way, I'd like you to rally other people as well. There are also vocal chants that could easily be started, you don't have to have music to cheer. I'm sure this will be talked about by all the different camps anyone might be apart of in this chain of posts.
If you want change don't just complain, do something.
I make it a point to clap and cheer when the team passes, I don't see many others do the same from the other tents do the same or even people walking by. Percentage wise I say the DMC tents cheer the most, but again I'm no spokesman.
