Re: Padrongood post - I am great on the driving range but can't play worth a crap on the course

Re: Padronit's all about the 'fog of war' as JJ says...you have to clearly perform in the games when they really count when the lights are on. All the QB stats in the world won't get SMU into BCS games......score points when it counts, is what JJ wants. He now thinks McDermet is the one that can deliver wins at this point in time and its up to him to lose the job. If Kyle actually gets into the game, he has to perform during the pressure filled times of important games....if not, he will be stuck way down on the bench again. I wish the best of luck to both of them.....we will need them both, as injuries happen.
Re: PadronI hope somethiing good comes from all of this for the team. I am glad Padron is engaged and working to get back on the field. I just watched the last game highlights and loved the fight and lowering of his head that Padron took to the end zone and his celebration roar, the most fight I have seen out of him. I imagine Padron will definitely see more on the goal line with our new option and if he brought that same attitude to the rest of his game we might have something. The next couple of weeks will be interesting.
Re: PadronThe problem with benching kyle for this reason is that you miss his superior play when he is not flustered. JJ is a nice player but his play is definetly below where kyle's is at when he is playing well. The UTEP game is a perfect example, there were a lot of points left on the board because I think JJ really struggles with throws over 25 yards with an acuracy and arm strength (kyle can struggle on these as well from an accuracy stand point but he definetly has a cannon).
Also If your worried about Kyle's head it seems like that is an issue that you should constantly test like how is he playing this week. I would probably prefere starting kyle with a short leash (and short means is he turning the ball over, not is the offense stalled) than having JJ in there basically the whole time.
Re: Padron
Those don't really count because it is unfair to the wide receivers. Wait til you see the points this team hangs in a day game!
Re: PadronGreat to see KP back in there last night.
Sad to see him (a) try too hard and (b) have happy feet... but (c) show why I think he's the answer. Cool thing is he can f up this year an we have JJ McD to put in there and say, "hey, Kyle, stop thinkin' too much. Just throw it." I see this all as good. As I said to begin this thread, we didn't have the guy to put in last year to make a point to Kyle. I have nothing against JJ, and if all of the sudden the light turns on for him then I'll be all about him. I just don't see any magic from him. I see him (as a player) as what Bill Parells would call a "bus-driver" and BELIEVE me that's not a bad thing. I just think that KP just needs some head smacking and then he's going to be great. I mean Hawaii Bowl great. He keeps trying to be great. He just hast to be comfortable. ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
Re: PadronKP is the emotional leader of this team, period. You can see it on the sidelines in how the players respond to him, and how he keeps encouraging his teammates even though he is QB2 right now. Our immediate success has higher potential with him starting, and meaning no knocks against JJMcD. But Kyle certainly needs to figure out how to make it click, and he is the one and only one that can do that.
Re: Padron
I think this hits the nail on the head, and if sitting next to Coach Jones and learning to see what JJ apparently sees but can't consistently execute helps slow the game down for him, so be it. I like that he is owning up to his leadership responsibility and making the effort, and I hope he gets some series (ideally a full quarter) against Memphis to see if he can apply what he is learning. He is definitely the bigger talent and the emotional core of the offense, so I am all for whatever it takes to get his head right and let JJ "drive the bus" for a bit until it happens. But so far, I have no illusions of JJ McDermott leading this offense past the likes of TCU, UH, Tulsa or Navy all on his own. In three games he has not impressed me much; he gets a couple of good drives and then stalls, and the burden falls on Zach to save the day. I hope JJ snaps out of that quickly, and then we are actually in a good place, with 2 QB's who can play and a RB who can take over games when needed. I, for one, can live with that.
