QB Benching in Hawaii?Hawaii Types: I know JJ benches QB's from time to time, like Chang. Is there a similar situation to the Padron? Is Padron likely toast or is this a "learning" situation.

Re: QB Benching in Hawaii? This excerpt from Wikipedia is basically what June Jones is hoping for-a backup Senior saviour:
Nick Rolovich was a two-year letterman at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he replaced starter and eventual all-time NCAA career passing leader Timmy Chang early in the 2001 season, leading the Hawaii Warriors football team to an 8-1 record. During those nine games, Rolovich threw for 3,361 yards and 34 touchdowns on 233-of-405 passing. He ended his college career with three straight 500-yard passing games. He also tossed school single-game records of 8 touchdowns and 543 yards in a 72-45 win over BYU on December 8, 2001. Those numbers helped him place tenth in the nation in pass efficiency (105.5) while breaking 19 school passing records and eight total offense records. Rolovich participated in and was named one of the two MVPs from the 2002 Hula Bowl college all-star game. Re: QB Benching in Hawaii? We don't even sniff hawaii's jock .....
Re: QB Benching in Hawaii?Note that Nick Rolovich started his junior season as the starting QB for Hawaii, but was benched early in the season due to poor play. However, he got his starting job back for the last 2/3 of his senior season and put together an amazing run of big numbers and big wins (especially that huge win over BYU with 8 TD passes, I think BYU was ranked #9 at the time).
So, for those who say that a junior QB being benched for poor play will never play for JJ again, Rolovich seems to completely contradict that statement. It should also be noted that Tim Chang got his job back after Rolovich graduated and won 2 straight bowl games (MVP of the win over Houston, co-MVP for the win over UAB) to end his college career, in addition to setting so many passing records. That is another example of a starting QB losing his job (however, this was due to injury), working hard to understand the system better, then doing much better after getting the QB spot back. Re: QB Benching in Hawaii?
you're not implying that Chang was benched in favor of Rolovich, are you? 2001 was the year that Chang was lost for the year due to injury and Rolovich stepped in. as I recall, Chang was benched a couple of times in his career, but it wasn't the case in the scenario above. maybe, I misunderstood your point.
Re: QB Benching in Hawaii?where does it say I'm implying anything? This is straight from Wikipedia

Re: QB Benching in Hawaii?By drawing a comparison between the replacement of Chang with a backup-senior and the current QB situation, it is implied that the two situations are similar, when in fact the first situation was due to injury, and the current situation is not.
Re: QB Benching in Hawaii?you posted that excerpt in a thread that is asking if there was a precedent for qb benching by JJ. that excerpt refers to how well Rolovich did after Chang was injured, not benched. so, I still don't get it.

QB Benching in Hawaii?
Very eloquent
Re: QB Benching in Hawaii?
You are correct. Rolo took over because of an injury to Chang. It was Rolo who was benched in favor of Chang after winning the starting job and got off to a slow start early in his Hawaii career. Everyone knew Rolo was the better QB between the two. JJ was stuck between a rock and a hard place when it came to Timmy Chang, the local favorite who was highly recruited but choose to play for the home team. Jones was almost forced to play Chang. Yes, Chang was benched for a couple of halfs but they were always ROAD games where he sucked. He would always win his job back for the next game. Never saw him benched for a home game. Seems Jones does not start a QB based on talent alone. HE wants to be the main reason why his QB succeeds, not the QB's talent level. The 9 game span mentioned above by Rolo was the best ever by a Hawaii QB. Not even Colt Brennan could come close. BTW, Rolo is now Hawaii's Offensive Coordinator and is doing great things to the Run & Shoot.
Re: QB Benching in Hawaii?
Can we steal him from Hawaii? Is Morrison part of the problem?

Personally, I don't want to sniff anyone's jock. Ponyfans.com voice of reason
Re: QB Benching in Hawaii?
That guy is probably in line to be Hawaii's next HC. Not sure why he would give up playcalling duties to come here. Jones and Morrison are responsible for developing the QBs and there is currently a problem in that area. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security
