Temple/ Penn State--- SMU/TAMU-SMU/TT?

Postby ponyscott » Sat Sep 17, 2011 12:27 pm

You could directly compare the past history, bowl game drought, rising from the dead, spotty attendance, big cities etc between SMU and Temple Football and Temple is leading Penn State 10-7 at the half! Even though Penn State isn't ranked at this time, you could compare or contrast this game to SMU/TAMU or SMU/Texas or maybe SMU/TT in local or national stature...and Temple is leading this game at home. We haven't even really been competitive with our local big schools...Why so?.....Is Temple ahead of us in their drive to BCS status as they are more apparently competitive at this point?.....or not?

This would be extremely huge for Temple football, if they were to win this game.

Interesting point. I grew up and went to grad school in Philly, after graduating from SMU. Temple was in the Big East for football until a few years ago when they were forced out. The main problems were lack of support, poor attendance and lack of a true home field. In the late 90's they were alternating their home games between Franklin Field on the UPENN campus and Veterans Stadium. They dropped down into the MAC for football and remain in the A10 for basketball. Their football team improved when Al Golden was hired and moved all home games to Lincoln Financial field. It would be a big win to beat PSU however they did lose to FCS Villanova last year and barely beat them this year. I don't think anyone is clamoring for them to rejoin the BCS as they are primarily a commuter school with a campus in the worst section of Philly. PSU already dominates the Philly market which is mainly a college basketball /pro football town.

Penn State won with a TD late in the game to win 14-10, but Temple almost beat PSU for the first time in 70 years.....An impressive effort.

SMU should be competitive to the end of the game like this at this point with similar teams like TAMU, TCU, etc.

That's the point...we have stubbed our toes in the first half of every big game as of late.....Temple was focused and stayed in the game all the way to the end.
