Books on SMU Football

Postby Mac » Mon Jan 28, 2002 10:06 pm

Does anyone know of any books about SMU football with regards to the Death Penalty? I thought there was a book that discussed all the violations and went into detail about who was involved. I know about the book, A Payroll to Meet, but I didn't know if there were any others. Please let me know if anyone knows of some good reading on the subject matter. Thanks.

I have heard, and I don't know how true this is that Brian Bozworth wrote a book that mentions his visit to SMU as a recruit. Apparently they were throwing money at him and he felt like trouble was on the horizon.

Before all the Boazhoes Bashers come out and correct me...i don't know if this is true or not. Just what I heard a while back by an OU fan. If anybody knows anything about it...let us know.

"A Payroll to Meet" is the only book I know of that is specifically about the troubles at SMU, but if you look around they are mentioned in a number of serious books about college football/athletics written since those days "Vain Glory" is one. I think Rick Tealander mentioned the Death Penalty in his book on the game.

David Whitford wrote "Payroll," by the way.

There is an article on ESPN right now at http://espn.go.com/ncf/s/2001/1126/1284940.html. "The Death of the Penalty", it talks about how the NCAA doesn't punish teams for cheating like it once did. Compares the effect of the DP to that of a nuclear bomb. Ouch.

NCAA always seemed to indicate they would never again use the dp. Just look at the record since, including the announcement regarding alabama. As I've always said, we were sacrifical lambs for the sins of the bigger NCAA programs.

Yes, thank you, NCAA, for making SMU the "Nagasaki" of college football.

I have long said we should sue those bastards for selective enforcement.
