Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingIts starting to sound like you may be right. However, I think the Big 12 will not get the 5 year commitment that is being ballied around out there. Also, regardless of the next 5 years I think the Big East will be raided. The Big 12 cannot and will not stay at 9 teams. Some combination of BYU, TCU, Cincinnati, Louisville, or WVU will leave the Big East or be left in what is the shell of the Big East. The problem is where does SMU fit in this world?
If I had to make a bet I think we see a serious effort on the part of CUSA and the MWC to beat the big boys at a superconference for a "football only" setup. Regardless of if the big conferences move now, a year from now, or five years from now, CUSA and the MWC will have to make a move to secure its future. Why not now? Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingOnce more I see myself agreeing with you. The time for us isn't now. We're not entitled to special recognition. A win against Nevada in Hawaii and then a disastrous performance against Army entitles us to a Big XII/Big East invitation? I don't think so. However, like I was telling StallionsModelT, if we continue on this path, in 5 years we will look good. Our recruiting is top of our conference and is better than a lot of BCS schools out there. We'll get there with time, and for the next shake up we will hopefully be looking like TCU. Maybe not as Rose Bowl champs, but hopefully by then we would have threatened the BCS a little bit.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingWell according to some, Baylor should get a reserved spot in any BCS conference no matter what happens, and Memphis, literally one of the 5 worst FBS programs should be in the Big East or Big 12, so maybe we should make outrageous demands based on no facts.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is Tickingi totally disagree with this we don't deserve it anyway stuff. We have been building for a decade too. Where do you think Ford Stadium came from? The Boulevard? Long overdue academic reforms that took years? On campus facilities to grow the school? Fundraising? And why doesnt hiring June Jones for $2m count? you don't get what you deserve anyway, you're gonna get what you can negotiate.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is Ticking"Deserve" has nothing to do with it. Conferences will be looking at what programs offer the most stability, TV sets, and new markets. Dallas is a trump card for us and might help. I'm still holding out hope for a CUSA-MWC merger.
Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is Ticking
TCU is looking scared. Maybe less so than a few days ago.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is Ticking
And that's fine and I'm glad we're doing that. But we still have a long way to go, that's the point. We can't fill our small stadium unless it's against TCU (where they fill up more than a third of the stadium). And on the field, we still have a longer way to go. We need to be winning our conference and actually beating BCS opponents when the chance comes. That will come with time, but all I am saying is that we're not in a position to feel entitled about being invited to the Big XII, not yet at least. We have to be the school that everyone wants to scoop up during the next conference realignment, and right now selling ourselves on our "future potential" is still a weak argument for conferences who want strength and stability today.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingMy biological clock is ticking
Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingSMU has everything going for it now and you guys are right in that it will take some more time....Why ? Because SMU still doesn't Market its football program properly concerning bringing in Dallas area fans. The result now is 20,000+ for first two games while everyother competing school is concerned with realignment also. We all know this isn't going to cut it with a bcs conference, unless SMU can buy their way into a conference...Sure our attendance will improve a lot if and when we get in a bcs conference, but a bcs conference wants to make sure you already have fans that support the team....Post DP for almost twenty years, SMU did little to attract fans, and with higher admission standards way beyond NCAA requirements, SMU assured success was impossible. Changes have been made in admission standards, and the team/recruiting is improving....Slowly, student support is starting to build up again with recent success, but we need help to fill the stadium NOW. We have a good product now, but SMU is going to need the help of Dallas and it is going to take Marketing to get it done. It is going to take more work than just giving away tickets.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingThe point is when the dust settles the other major teams in CUSA will likely be raided and we will be left with the likes of Rice, Tulane, UTEP and forced to consider adding garbage programs like unt, utsa, arky st. etc. It is not what we have accomplished, it is the fact that to survive as a major program we must be able to move up or we will likely be a non-factor for many years to come. JMHO.
GO PONIES!!!
Re: SMU -- The Clock is Ticking
I agree to a certain point. SMU has fixed up the window dressing, but the interior gutting and redo, i.e. the football and basketball progams have only been happening in the last four years. SMU is on the right track but it is time to start winning with both programs or all we will ever get is a, "Thank you for asking but at this time we are not interested" from any BCS conference. GO MUSTANGS!

Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingI agree that SMU is on a 3-4 year building plan and should be back to national prominence by then. Get the 4 stars (and possible 5 star with Printz) into the program and experienced and WINNING and the recruiting pipeline will snowball and conference stuff will take care of itself. Dallas will get behind this team when it WINS. Texas aTm was such a great opportunity for us. TCU will be another one (really need to win that one!) but we might not be ready for that until another year or 2. 3-4 years from now, and I want to be able to watch SMU play in the Rose Bowl and not TCU (I live about 2 hours away from it ...). I think we are definitely on the right track and major props to SMU to have been building this for a few years now with Ford Stadium, hiring June Jones, etc. Starting to see recruiting improve, etc. We're getting there.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingCoxMustangFan, Comet, StallionsModelT and WestexSMU all make great points. SMU Athletics needs to start dressing for the job they want, not using the "when we win" excuse as a rationale for not even trying to establish marketing relevance for their programs.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is Ticking
You can sit at the nicest restaurant, drink the finest champagne, have the tastiest side items, but a turd sandwich is still a turd sandwich. We are moving in the right direction. We need to be putting as much pressure as we can on a BCS conference to take us. We need to play all the cards we have (location, location, location). But we also need to become more competitive on the field week in, week out. Year in, year out. We need to start beating a TCU or B12 school on a regular basis. We need to be dominating CUSA (like TCU in the MWC). Then we will be in the discussion. Conferences will want us on their short lists, and it will not be us trying to force ourselves down others throats and telling them it tastes good.
