Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingTotally agree with ericdickerson4life on this one. If Boise moved to, let's say, the SEC or TCU to, say, the Big 12 BEFORE they went undefeated, would we even be talking about them as a power? I don't know, but doubtful. They'd be a 7-5, 8-4 type team. Maybe they still would have had great success but they would NOT have gone undefeated (most likely). So, we need to keep raiding Cali talent and get the offense explosive and start blowing out folks and WIN. THAT's when it gets fun. I WANT to get to the point that we go undefeated (or lose one game) and complain we're not playing for the national championship. If we are filling our stadium and become "Dallas' team", we get into whatever conference we want (most likely) and get to dictate our terms (somewhat). I want us to join the Pac-12, personally, so I can more easily see some games!

Re: SMU -- The Clock is Ticking
Don't forget to mention we need to find a way to fill our venues and make the big boys think people are actually interested in SMU...and don't give me the "win and they will come". It's true that some will, but not in the numbers we need. Just asked the guys who played with our ranked teams in the 80's.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingCharleston Pony is bang on. You really don't need to wait to "win" before you start doing things that every other school is doing. Believe me that the conferences are well aware of SMU's indifference in this area and are not impressed.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingWe have heard every excuse that can be thought of such as " we have plenty of alumni in the area to fill the Stadium. " Actually wrong..Fact is basically no one who attended SMU from 1989 to 2008 came here thinking how much fun it would be supporting the football team and SMU did little to try to rebuild its football team after DP until Coach Jones came here in 2008...Sure there are a lot of alumni in Dallas who went to school here during this time period, but they, for the most part, were lost as supporters as they are not interested in our football from their experience here. Sure you try to get them interested. I'm sure you pick up some interests, but it makes more since to go after all the college football fans that are moving to the Dallas area that don't have an area team. They like college football, and if they come from out of state, they may not even like the bigger schools in Texas. SMU could be their team if we reach out.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is Tickinghas there ever been an effort to brand smu as "Dallas' Team"? I would like to see that.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingBy Orsini's own (probably inflated) count in his appeal toward the BCS, we have 40K alumni living in Dallas. We'd have to rope in >60% of them every Saturday to consistently fill Ford Stadium. We HAVE to become Dallas' team, because otherwise, we built too many seats.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is Tickingis "America's team" taken?

Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingEvery private school that is successful in D1 football has community/area support to make it happen. Those that don't are not successful. So to not work on this issue in the past is unbelievable for any private school that wants to succeed in football. The good news is it appears that this may finally change here at SMU.

MT @ChrisLevel: Tech's Guy Bailey tells @AaronDickens and I that MU Chancellor Deaton told him MU doesn't have SEC offer, will stay in B12.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is Ticking
I do not disagree with what you are saying about becoming Dallas's team, but when you say we have to get >60% of the alumni you are not considering that many of those alumni are married to non-alums who they could bring and some of them will have children as well. Doesn't change the point that we need to bring in non-alums with no other connection, just something to consider when you throw out the >60% figure.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingI think we should apply to the Ivy League and run rampant beating up on Princeton, Harvard, Yale...etc. Solves our problem if we cannot become BCS and saves us from UNT, UTSA.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingI was thinking about this on my way in to work this morning. Why don't we have big honking signs with June Jones plastered all over them -- not the TCU high school looking signs, but real ones? I'd like to see them on 35 north and south, 75 north and south, 281, 635. Hell, put one in downtown Fort Worth! Frigging drop the cash and advertise! We have a very recognizable coach that the majority of Dallas has forgotten we have!
Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingYeah something like:
"June Jones-The Most Peculiar Man in the World" the guys on the Houston Cougar website already have about a 1,000 punchlines written about the mystical one. "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

Re: SMU -- The Clock is Ticking
Great strides, but much farther to go indeed. I was hoping for a statement game against TAMU (not a win necessarily, but competitive football), but we laid an egg. Need to fill up the stands. New school of eduction is a farce -- it's so popular that is is filled with regular upperclassmen, that our student-athletes can't even get into classes. Our support programs for student-athletes are yearqs behind. And to suggest we can deliver the Dallas market when we are disconnected from the, and oh by the way have no marketing department, is ridiculous. UT and TCU bothe market to the Dallas ADI better than we do. "It's a couple hundred million dollars. I'm not losing sleep over it." -- David Miller
