Pollock Gallery Exhibit: “Simen Johan: Until the Kingdom Comes”
What:              Born in Norway in 1973 and raised in Sweden, artist Simen Johan has lived and
                        worked in New York City since 1992. Johan has received international
                        recognition for his enigmatic  large-scale photographs that investigate the often-
                        uneasy relationship between the natural world of animals and the confusion and
chaos created by human activity through his hauntingly beautiful scenes of animals
seemingly adrift in dreamlike landscapes. Special thanks to the Frist Center for the Visual
Arts in Nashville, Tenn., for their assistance with the exhibition.

Hawn Gallery Exhibit: “Camilla Cowan: Paintings and Prints”
What:              This show will feature Camilla Cowan’s prints and paintings, many inspired by
                        molas and other folk art.  Cowan holds a journalism degree from SMU.  After
                        working in that field for many years, she returned to SMU in 2001 to study art. 
                        She works in both painting and printmaking and is interested in the contemplation
                        and accumulation of pattern, working with line, contrasts of light and dark and
                        complex curves. Her most recent show was in spring 2011 at the Mercantile
                        Coffee House in downtown Dallas.

Faculty Artist and Distinguished Alumni Recital Series: “Yi Wu, Piano”
What:              In commemoration of the bicentennial of Franz Liszt’s birth, distinguished
                        Meadows alumnus Yi Wu will perform an all-Liszt recital. Currently chair of
                        piano at Shanghai Normal University School of Music, Yi Wu received an Artist
                        Certificate from the Meadows School in 1992 as a student of Joaquín Achúcarro.
                        He is internationally recognized for his live and recorded performances. This
                        concert is the first in a new series that includes performances by top Meadows
                        music alumni.

Meadows Wind Ensemble: The MWE Plays the Classics
What:              The MWE opens the 2011-2012 concert season with a program of “classics” for
                        wind ensemble. This “greatest hits” program will include Paul Dukas’s Fanfare
                        pour preceder La Peri, Anton Dvořák’s Serenade in D minor, Joseph
                        Schwantner’s Music of Amber, featuring Samuel Holland, director of the Division
                        of Music, on piano, Paul Hindemith’s Symphony in B-flat, and a set of popular
                        marches to close the program.

Meadows Museum Exhibit Opening: “Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan”
What:              Echoes of the Past is a major new exhibition that addresses the art and
                        architecture of the sixth-century Chinese cave temples of Xiangtangshan. Carved
                        into limestone cliffs in the mountains of northern China, these temples were once
                        home to a magnificent array of limestone sculptures – monumental Buddhas,
                        flying deities, and crouching monsters framed by floral scrolls – but suffered
                        extensive damage and pillaging in the first half of the 20th century. Drawing on
                        the work of an international research team based at the University of Chicago’s
                        Center for the Art of East Asia, the exhibition highlights recent efforts to
                        document and digitally reconstruct the original appearance of the cave temples.
                        The project features a novel combination of ancient art and new technology,
                        bringing together many of the most important Xiangtangshan sculptures held in
                        American and European museums, along with a set of innovative digital projects
                        that will connect these artworks to their original contexts.
                        Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan is organized by the Smart
                                Museum of Art, University of Chicago and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian
                                Institution. Major funding is provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Leon
                                Levy Foundation, the Smart Family Foundation and the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter
                                Foundation. Additional support for the Meadows Museum’s presentation is generously provided
                                by The Meadows Foundation. The exhibition is supported by a grant from the National
                                Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed

Faculty Artist and Distinguished Alumni Recital Series: “Larry Palmer, Harpsichord and Organ”
What:              Widely-known for his eclectic programming and engaging presentations, SMU
                        organist Larry Palmer will perform Poulenc’s Harpsichord Concerto,
                        accompanied by Meadows professor David Karp on piano, and works by
                        Couperin and Buxtehude. On Caruth Auditorium’s splendid Fisk organ, he also
will present Bach’s Fantasia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 537 and other works.
This program will mark Dr. Palmer’s 42nd annual faculty recital at SMU.

Visiting Artist Lecture Series: Kael Alford
Who:               A documentary photographer, writer and journalist, Kael Alford takes an
                        immersive and long-term approach to the subjects she reports. Her work has
                        focused on political conflict, underrepresented communities, cultural identity and
                        our relationship to the natural environment. Alford began her career in 1996,
                        covering culture and conflict in the Balkans and the Middle East for European and
                        American newspapers and magazines. Her work from Iraq is included in the book
Unembedded: Four Independent Photojournalists on the War in Iraq. She is
currently documenting Native American communities on the coast of Louisiana
facing dislocation due to massive coastal erosion and the environmental impacts
of the oil and gas industries. That work will be exhibited at the High Museum of
Art in Atlanta in July 2012. Alford was a 2009 Nieman Fellow at Harvard
University and currently teaches part-time in both the Division of Art and the
Division of Journalism at the Meadows School of the Arts. The Visiting Artist
Lecture Series, offering public presentations by contemporary artists and critics, is sponsored by the
Meadows Division of Art and supported in part by the Jackson/Warren Fund in honor of Professor
Larry Scholder.

Meadows Opera Theatre: Opera Free For All – New Faces & Old Friends
What:              The Opera Free For All annual brown bag series opens its 2011-2012 season with
                        “New Faces & Old Friends,” spotlighting Meadows Opera Ensemble soloists in
                        arias, songs and scenes. The concert will feature the return of favorite young
                        artists and introduce exciting new members of the ensemble as SMU begins its
                        celebration of Family Weekend!

Meadows Museum Symposium: Ribera’s Mary Magdalene
What:             This half-day symposium will provide context for Jusepe de Ribera’s master
                        painting Mary Magdalene, on view at the Meadows Museum as the second of
                        three annual loans from the Prado Museum in Spain.   The loan program, which
                        began last year with El Greco’s Pentecost, is designed to introduce American
                        audiences to key masterworks of Spanish art. Presentations will include Jusepe de
                        Ribera: A Great Reputation Won and Lost by Craig Felton, Professor of Art,
                        Smith College; Space for Women? Gendering the Baroque of 17th-Century
                        Naples by Helen Hills, Professor of Art History, York University; and Pain and
                        Redemption in the Art of Jusepe de Ribera by Gabriele Finaldi, Associate Director
                        of Collections and Research, Prado Museum. No reservation is necessary.
                        Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Meadows Museum Exhibit Opening: “The Prado at the Meadows -
Ribera: Mary Magdalene in a New Context”
What:              The second in a series of loans from the Prado Museum will feature Jusepe de
                        Ribera’s Mary Magdalene alongside other notable works by Ribera from
distinguished international museums and private collections, as well as works by
the artist and his followers from the Meadows’ permanent collection. The
exhibition will examine Ribera’s representation of Mary Magdalene and other
saintly females as a departure from his traditional style. This exhibition and project
have been organized by the Meadows Museum and the Museo Nacional del Prado,
and are funded by a generous gift from The Meadows Foundation.

Meadows Museum Exhibit Opening: “The Many Lives of Mary Magdalene: 
A Selection of Images from Bridwell Library Special Collections”
What:              Accompanying the display of Ribera’s Magdalene, this exhibition will illuminate
                        the stories surrounding Mary Magdalene, examining her pictorial narrative
                        through the ages. This exhibition has been organized by the Meadows Museum with assistance
                                from SMU’s Bridwell Library and has been funded by a generous gift from The Meadows
                                Foundation.

Faculty Artist and Distinguished Alumni Recital Series: “Lucille Chung, Piano”
What:             Meadows alumna and faculty member Lucille Chung has performed an extensive
                        repertoire of concertos with more than 50 leading orchestras, including
                        Philadelphia, Moscow Virtuosi and BBC. A winner of numerous international
                        competitions and veteran of the world’s major recital halls, she has been hailed as
                        “a considerable artist, admirable for her bold choice of music” by the London
                        Sunday Times.  This program will feature Mozart’s disarmingly moving Sonata in
                        B-flat major, K. 570 and the titanic Liszt Sonata in B minor.

Meadows Symphony Orchestra
What:              The MSO begins its 2011-2012 season with a program of new and classic works.
                        The concert opens with Meadows faculty composer Simon Sargon’s Tapestries
                        (four scenes from Saul, King of Israel), which was premiered by the Dallas
                        Symphony in 1999.  Aaron Copland’s Piano Concerto, written in 1926 and
                        considered his most jazz-influenced composition, will feature soloist Carol Leone,
                        chair of the Meadows keyboard department. The concert concludes with one of
                        Beethoven’s greatest and most loved works, the magnificent Symphony No. 5.

Brown Bag Dance Series
What:              The Brown Bag Dance Series features free lunchtime performances of 10-15 short
                        ballet, modern and jazz works. Now in its 29th season, the Brown Bag Series
                        offers student choreographers a chance to showcase their own original and inventive
                        works, some of which have evolved into national award-winning productions.

Play: The Miser by Molière
Translated and adapted by James Magruder
What:              First performed by Molière himself in 1668, this rollicking comedy still enthralls
                        almost 350 years later.  Jealous fathers, anxious lovers and brilliant servants are
                        trapped in a whirlwind of amorous plotting and strategic revelations. The
                        Washington Post described Magruder’s sparkling new translation as “a saucy
                        serving…for those who like their French fare spicy and au courant.” Directed by
                        James Crawford, associate professor in the Division of Theatre.
