Re: SMU2BCSWhen it comes to college football conference realignment, it's important that you do what's best for Texas, and what's best for Texas is to preserve the Big 12 Conference, stabilizing it through strategic expansion.
According to a report by economist Ray Perryman, if the Big 12 dissolves, the state of Texas stands to lose more than 8,000 jobs and over $1 billion in total spending. Texas voters understand what college football means to our economy. According to an August 2011 study by Equation Research, 74 percent of Texas voters agree that NCAA sporting events have a positive impact on the economy by generating jobs and revenue. Further, 60 percent of Texas voters feel that conference revenue should support state/local communities and a majority of Texas voters feel that SMU should be invited to the Big 12 if it boosts the state's economy. Moreover, adding SMU to the Big 12 helps keep the conference a regional entity, something that 56 percent of Texas voters say is important. When it comes to college athletics, proximity matters. According to a report by economists Weinstein & Clower (Dec. 2010), “enhanced attendance for all athletic events due to enhanced rivalries and close proximity of competition [results] in increases in concession, parking, and merchandise expenditures as a results of greater game attendance; recaptured travel spending by teams as out-of-state games will be playing in-state; and enhanced total broadcasting revenues.†Here are five reasons why SMU is ready for the Big 12: 1. TRADITION: For 85 years, SMU competed in a conference with Texas, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Texas Tech, and TCU, winning national championships in football in 1981 and 1982. It’s only been the last 15 years that SMU has played in a non-BCS conference. 2. ATHLETIC SUCCESS: Under head football coach June Jones, a former national coach of the year, SMU has earned consecutive bowl berths and won back-to-back division titles. Its men’s basketball team, led by former national coach of the year Matt Doherty, posted a 20-win season in 2010-11. SMU has won eight Team Championships, over 100 individual NCAA Championships, and 138 Conference Team Championships, while posting 147 NCAA Top-10 team finishes. 3. FINANCIAL COMMITMENT: SMU has the largest athletic budget of any non-BCS AQ school. It’s committed to competing at the highest level of collegiate athletics, opening a new $60 million on-campus football stadium in 2000 and embarking on an $80 million plan to build new facilities and improve existing ones. 4. STRONG ACADEMICS: SMU ranks No. 62 among "best national universities" in US News & World Report and is No. 41 among private universities in that category. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has raised SMU’s classification to a research university with “high research activity.†SMU's Cox School of Business is one of the few schools in the nation with three M.B.A. programs ranked in the top 15, according to Bloomberg Businessweek. Further, in 2009-10, SMU ranked first in the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Directors Cup Division I Final Standings. 5. DALLAS: The ninth-largest city and part of the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the nation, Dallas is the No. 1 visitor and leisure destination in Texas. Home to the Big 12 Conference offices, Dallas is centrally located and within a four-hour flight from most North American destinations. DFW International Airport is the world’s third-busiest airport, offering nearly 1,750 flights per day and providing non-stop service to 144 domestic and 44 international destinations worldwide annually. In addition, Dallas Love Field Airport is conveniently located 10 minutes from downtown. In 2011, Dallas became the first city to host the Super Bowl, the World Series, and the NBA Finals, all within the same 12-month period. For these reasons and more, SMU is ready for the Big 12. I urge you to support the stabilization of the Big 12 by adding SMU to the conference. Thank you for the role you play in shaping our great state. Respectfully,
