Big 12 will be 10 with with BYUIt is all about the TV Benjamins for Big 12 membership. UT has enough TV fan base in DFW and Houston that the FSSW and ESPN don't need additional coverage in those markets. Hence, the acting commish goes out of state and gets BYU first. If Missouri stays, then the conference will probably stay at 10 members unless they can pick off two good teams form the Big East. SMU is stuck out unless the Big East is desperate to replace their losses. Look what the WAC did by picking up UTSA and Texas State. The market is the all in all these days in football.

Re: Big 12 looking outside of state to expandIts not just the tv market issue- although that is probably the most important part of the equation. Texas has no taste for sharing the state with anymore BCS programs. Period. Neither do A&M, Tech , OU or OSU for that matter. But since this new commissioner is obviously Deloss Dodd's boy it is appropriate to blame them for us never getting into the Big 12.
Re: Big 12 looking outside of state to expandWould TCU try to block us if the Big East was interested?

Re: Big 12 looking outside of state to expand
Maybe we need an $PAC for SMU2Big12. Sad but true way to get more state legislatures on our side.
UT believes they should be Texas's only team, plain and simple. Judging by how much money ESPN is willing to bet on them with LHN, they will be working hard to make this happen. I'm sure if they could they would shove TT and Baylor out in a heart beat like they did to the other former SWC members. They have the OU game as an excuse to play in Dallas. It is framed as the states battling for bragging rights. If they could they would probably find an excuse to play a non-Texas team in Houston instead of playing Rice, but as it is, Rice is seen as a consistent warm-up team and harmless to their aims as Rice was neutered of relevance after being kicked out of the Big8 SWC merger. If New Orleans area had a high profile team, I'm sure Texas would try to play them in Houston similar to UT-OU in Dallas.
Re: Big 12 looking outside of state to expand
1st of all, I think we all understand TCU doesn't "deliver" the Texas TV market. For the Big East, inviting TCU was about trying to hold on to the their football AQ status (that they really don't deserve based on recent years play). TCU's invite may have been a factor, along with the SEC's move to grab A$M, prompting Pitt and Cuse to bail and has others hoping to join them. I can't imagine those northeastern schools are excited about having to travel to Ft Worth and I would bet the majority of TCU fans are concerned about this relationship as well. I wouldn't hang my hopes on joining TCU in a far flung Big East football league trying to survive. Right now, I think SMU need to be looking closely at the much talked about CUSA/MWC merger that might result in AQ status...and I hope that TCU someday comes back to join us in that venture
Re: Big 12 looking outside of state to expandIf I'm in Lubbock or Waco, I doubt I would be excited about recruiting against a school in Dallas.
It sounds like they might have to go to Alaska to find someone who will accept. Not over yet.......
Re: Big 12 looking outside of state to expandThis may not be just UT. Other schools, especially Nebraska, had big problems with the changes that came about in the conference when the Texas schools came in. I could absolutely see KU, KSU, and ISU saying that they didn't want another school from Texas in.
Re: Big 12 looking outside of state to expand
I live in Austin. When UT's program was bottoming out in the 90s, they lost to Rice in Houston and that was the end of the old SWC. In their last Cotton Bowl appearance they had been humiliated by Miami, and when they couldn't compete with Rice, well, let's just say Deloss had to move fast. So his answer was to relegate as many Division 1 schools in Texas to lesser conferences and give UT as much of a recruiting advantage as possible.
Re: Big 12 looking outside of state to expandWe all understand that...... its a rhetorical question....so rephrase, why is Texas so friggin snobby?...or why is Dela$$ Dodds such an [deleted]?[/quote]

Thanks to those who convinced the administration to commit to football and those who give what they can (including those who can give much more than most of us) for keeping the life support system going.
Re: Big 12 looking outside of state to expandChip Brown message:
"Despite what interim Big 12 commissioner Chuck Neinas said on ESPN's College GameDay Saturday about there being "resistance" to adding a school to the Big 12 from the state of Texas, TCU remains under strong consideration as school No. 10 in the Big 12, multiple sources told Orangebloods.com." "And a source close to Texas said any reports suggesting Texas is resistant to TCU joining the conference are "not true." --------
Re: Big 12 looking outside of state to expandand I don't understand the attraction of 10 vs 9 teams
Re: Big 12 looking outside of state to expandI still don't understand the appeal of WVU
Re: Big 12 looking outside of state to expand
The attraction is the money from their TV contract.
