Pony in SA wrote:To compare UTSA to UTA is comical, they are in totally different positions. Sure some attendance will drop but because of their student population, the number of season ticket holders already in place, and the fact they are one of the only games in down to say this is just a novelty and their attendance will drop is simply not accurate.

I would have to agree with this, even if they experience a drop, they could still easily maintain 20K in attendance which is something we struggle to do. They are the only show in the area, so that puts them at a huge advantage appeal wise. SA also is also predominantly Hispanic so they may be tapping into a market that is rather undeserved when it comes to college football and a growing demographic of Texas. It is hard to get people to see SMU as Dallas' team when we have a stereotype of being solely white and upper-class. UTSA is way more accessible of a school and that might be to its advantage. TCU overcame being seen as unapproachable through years of getting kids onto their campus through the bleacher creatures. SMU has a much tougher task in that although we have the money, it will be harder to get non-alumni fans as we are not the only show in the metroplex. Alumni of the last twenty years, will comeback, but they went to an SMU were fb was a joke, we still see this today in the fact many blvd and then go elsewhere. Lots of cultural changes waiting to take place at SMU. Winning will be the ultimate cure.

UTA would be foolish to think they could replicate UTSA's success. Completely different school and area. North Texas is already over-saturated with sports. I remeber they had hired a consultant several years ago to make their city "hip," not sure what has become of that. Arlington always seems like a cultural void with buildings between Dallas and FW. They could have made it more accessible if they had joined the TRE, but they fear homeless so that was a no go. It makes generic Southlake look like a unique cultural mecca in comparison. Not to mention from people I know that have dealt with UTA admin, it is a mess over there.

Like it or not.....San Antonio is a destination for not only Texans, but for people outside the state. There is a lot of upside for them with San Antonio's population, the Riverwalk, multiple resorts, hotels, media coverage, and the fact that they don't have to compete with someone else. SMU and TCU compete not only with each other, but with the Cowboys. UofH and Rice compete not only with each other but with the Texans. UTSA has nobody close by except for UT and Texas State. They could be attractive to many conferences.

I was not saying the 2 schools were in the same position. I was simply stating a fact that UTA is watching UTSA to see how they do. My whole point was that UTSA was in a much better position to be succesful. I find it odd that UTA would use that as a benchmark.

Wow, we have a lot of football geniuses on this board that aren't able to actually follow a paragraph before jumping to their own conclusion, which ironically was the point being made in the paragraph they supposedly read.

Eh...15k is what I see them sustaining in the long-run, barring games against high-interest schools. Student body size is roughly the same as UNT, conference competition is roughly the same as UNT (once UTSA moves into the WAC), stadium is far from campus (lowers student interest) but local interest is higher in SA than Denton. Translation: UTSA is UNT of South Texas.

UTSA will have to compete with the Spurs in future seasons. Everyone knew the NBA wasn't playing this season so they invested some money in UTSA tickets.

Those are tickets sold, not actual attendance. They sold a lot of tickets this year.
