Question?..When was last time TCU & SMU only had 1 loss

Postby ponyscott » Sun Sep 25, 2011 10:03 am

when they played EACH other for the Iron Skillet?...I couldn't find that stat anywhere on Google. C'mon slueths.... A 'Just for grins' stat, but still important to note, no matter who we both played. I noticed TCU forfeited their game with SMU in 1918...any chance TCU will forfeit next weeks game with us?...lol

The Battle for the Iron Skillet is the name of the college football rivalry between the Southern Methodist University Mustangs and the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs. The campuses are located 40 miles apart in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The winner of the game receives an iron skillet as a trophy.

The teams have played all but six years since their first meeting in 1915. They did not face each other in 1919, 1920, 1925, 1987, 1988, or 2006. Although no longer in the same conference, SMU and TCU agreed to play each season through 2017 on an alternating home-and-away basis.

The origin of the Iron Skillet is unknown, but one theory states TCU and SMU fans began the tradition back in the 1950s. During pre-game festivities, an SMU fan was frying frog legs as a joke before the game. A TCU fan, seeing this desecration of the "frog", went over and told him that eating the frog legs was going well beyond the rivalry and that they should let the game decide who would get the skillet and the frog legs. TCU won the game, and the skillet and frog legs went to TCU. The tradition eventually spilled over into the actual game and the Iron Skillet is now passed to the winner.

Re: Question?..When was last time TCU & SMU were both 3-1

Postby SMUPhil » Sun Sep 25, 2011 11:22 am

Since the game has been at different parts of the season throughout its history, sometimes first game, sometimes last game, it's possible that we've never both been 3-1 going into the Iron Skillet game.

And yeah, I'll take a forfeit next week!

Probably true and maybe too hard to find that answer, so I changed the question......

Well I'm not sure if it has happened since the DP but I think in 1985 the Saturday after Wacker turned his team into the NCAA I think was the last year both teams had this kind of high expec tations. It was expected to be a close game in Amon Carter but we blew then out something like 56-21 when about 6 of their players were suspended. Not many great SMU/TCU matchups in about 6 decades Probably the most overrated rivalry ever because rarely have both teams been great at the same time. SMU/Baylor was our real classic rivalry in the 70s and 80s.

glad we surprised them and ruined their 2005 season...otherwise, they would be approaching our 15 wins in a row in this series

time to get another win against the purple menace

Stallion......Good call...but TCU was 2-0 going into that game and SMU was only 1-0 ( beat UTEP), so they were both undefeated at the time....lol.

Could it have been in the 1940's when they both only had 1 loss?

In 2001, we were 0-1 and TCU was 1-1 going into the game. :P

But in all seriousness,

1992: SMU 2-1, TCU 0-1-1
1990: SMU 1-1, TCU 2-1

And that's all I could find using this:

the real question here is the one that stallion answered: when was the last time both teams had high hopes for the season when they played each other. Hard to believe that it has been lopsided for all these years. Makes this year a lot more fun.

Thanks perunapower...difficult question I guess and the above answers are correct so we can't use that to promote/hype the game. We could probably say TCU and SMU have NEVER both been 3-1 when they played each other!...FWIW
