Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingWe have the right coach in June Jones. He has the genius of Leach and the class of Landry.
Leach is such a head case, he was doomd to implode sooner or later. I can't see how he could possibly survive here with our parents and our alumni. Texas Tech had such an inferiority complex, they were essentially willing to sell their souls to compete for a conference championship. Once their program got restabished, Leach's B.S. was no longer worth putting up with. "It's a couple hundred million dollars. I'm not losing sleep over it." -- David Miller
Re: SMU -- The Clock is Tickingwe tried the regular student athlete experiment. It failed - as it has for any other school who has tried it. ND, Northwestern, Stanford - they all make HUGE exceptions for admissions on athletes and they hire fleets of tutors to "advance toward a degree" - despite that degree in kinseology or whatever being worth not much.
We are going to play by the rules that everyone else plays by - and we are not going back.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingI hope you are right that we will play by the rules gostangs. Problem is - JJ and Orsini want to change it so that sub-par student-athletes are admitted into SMU. To hell with the consequences. I think it is a bad idea, but some on this board would sell their soul for the good old "cheatin" days.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is Tickingyou misread my post - letting in the sub par athlete is playing by the rules. That is what everyone else does. Now that we started doing it we are winning. we do that or we can drp down to a different division - that is the only choice.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is TickingIts not cheating if they meet NCAA Minimum qualification standards-but let's not kid ourselves about 60% of June Jones/Doherty's' recruited athletes wouldn't be admitted to SMU without special admissions. This is a big change. That's fine by me as long as SMU is playing by both the letter and spirit of NCAA rules. Violating the spirit of NCAA rules might include manufactured transcripts , coursework, diploma mills, behavior issues and athletes whose academic background show they are not likely to be successful ie letting even qualified athletes in with SATs that are 600 points below SMU's average. I think there are two different issues-admissions which SMU has done what is necessary and curiculum/support where it may not be as clear.

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is Ticking
You are kidding??? Don't mention Jones and Landry in the same sentence. Jones' past is disgusting. Class? Lack there of, maybe. Jones should be at UNLV... that's his class.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is Tickingwe need to do more on support (tutors). Its better but we arent there yet.
Re: SMU -- The Clock is Tickingthis conversation is getting boring...
