Another pathetic performance...

Postby Johnny Rock » Mon Oct 11, 2004 8:15 am

I did not believe SMU would beat Rice. Even though Rice had several key players out with injuries. Rice's coach is outstanding. I believe he does a great job with the players he gets. He has a 'plan' and sticks to it. SMU, on the other hand, does not have a 'plan' and it showed again. Too many times with Bennett's team, SMU seems to look confused on offense. We are approaching the middle of the season and Bennett still cannot decide on a starting QB. It is not fair to the QBs and it is not fair to the team. Decide who the best QB on the team is and play him....period. Eckert was playing well and he gets benched? W.T.F! Shame on you Phil Bennett. If Romo is better then play him the whole game. If Eckert is better then play him the whole game. It is Cavan part 2. I am not disturbed SMU lost to Rice. I am distrubed SMU only scored one TD against a Rice team that gave up 70 the week before to a team we beat. The players are not to blame for this one....it is on Phil Bennett, again. I was excited when Bennett was hired as coach but it appears he is not head coaching material, at least, not with this team. SMU's struggles began long before he arrived and will continue long after he leaves. When it is his time to pack his bags (which will likely be after this season), I just hope Copeland is right behind him. It is time for a complete overhaul of the athletic program (including its rules and regulations) before SMU is forced out of Division 1-A.

Coach Bennett's not going anywhere, troll. Thankfully, the higher-ups understand that the likelihood of winning with a team full of freshmen and redshirt freshmen and sophomores (and JUCOs, who despite more age also are new to the system) is not high. It's been said on this site by countless folks that this year is for growth and maturation - maybe a few wins this year, but more than likely, the wins start next year.

I am a troll? I am not the one rotating QBs. I am not the one getting outcoached. I will not apologize for stating facts. Reality is not always what the SMU clan want to hear. The fact is SMU has played some of the worst football in the country over the last five years. No disrepect to N. Texas, but they are out recruiting SMU, and they have worse facilities, less tradition, and play in a worse conference. What gives? Until you wake up and look at the facts, then SMU will continue to struggle and get embarressed. I have some advice for you, take your head out of Bennetts and Copelands' rear for a few moments and you may have a clearer view of the reality of SMU football.

J-Rock: That was a pretty CS, short-sighted post. Was that to make you feel better? Coach Bennett is not going anywhere... get used to it or move on. There has been a plan in place since Day 1 and I think it's gonna work!

Me too. Coach Bennett is the right man, and he's making the hard choices now to benefit the program in the long run. (How much faster would the team be if LaCori Johnson, Jessie Henderson, Kyle Griffin, Vincent Chase, DeMyron Martin, etc., were playing? A lot - but they'll be better off with a year of conditioning/strength/practice under their belts.) When Coach Bennett has the Ponies winning again in a year or two, I fully expect to read your "I told you all along that Coach Bennett was a genius" posts.

I am still upset with what I saw Saturday night. But, after years, why can't we simply get a punter or make a punt over 35 yards? The team quit before the half, after two poor plays of our special teams. If Phil's brother can't fix it perhaps he should replace him. The "swinging gate" on PA's is pure "high school" and the overall performance of our special teams has got to cause problems with the other coaches because of Phil's special coach!

Bennett/AD

Postby rich_alum » Mon Oct 11, 2004 1:06 pm

I don't know that I am ready for a complete AD overhaul nor am I ready for a new head coach but I will agree that Bennett should stick with 1 QB.

Using two QB's never seems to work anywhere (exception was maybe that Arizona team 6 or 7 years ago) and it sure doesn't seem to be working here. There is no way a QB can get in the flow of the game when he is in and out. Not to mention its not a real confidence booster when you are looking over your shoulder.

If we are going to use this spread offense, I would rather see us go down in flames trying to move the ball down the field w/ Eckert using big pass plays. Even if it means throwing a few int's.

I wish Phillips was healthy.
