Southland Conference is comprised of Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin State, Texas State-San Marcos (formerly Southwest Texas State), Nicholls State, McNeese State and Northwestern State.

In Div. 1-AA nationwide rankings, SFA is currently #10, Northwestern #11 and Sam Houston #12.

I don't want to see SMU fall to Div. 1-AA status. I continue to believe that this program will turn around. Call me a 'sunshiner' but I truly believe that better days are ahead for the Mustangs.

I'm 21 and I am beginning to see the great possibility that I will die before seeing SMU have a winning season. I may even be in a nursing home before we beat TCU. It just seems like a vicious cycle of hiring a new coach, 3 sorry years and then firing him and then hiring again. I apologize to the fans of SMU for my bitter postings of late. I do think at the very least the players are trying very hard to get better. I also think that moving people around from position to position is probably not the best thing to be doing in the middle of the season, but what can you do with so many injuries. I was told that Foy Munlin did not play a down on Saturday. If that's true then we had a big player missing as well. I don't know if I can watch SMU get ripped apart by loserana tech. I don't care who they've beaten. They just aren't a good team. That makes it all the more evident that are program is in the toilet right now. And about dropping to Div 2. I don't think that is a good move for us. We should be in Div 3 if we drop so we can play other private schools like Trinity (san antonio). That would be a fun rivalry (i understand that won't be a popular opinion).

I would say that they few SMU fans that are still around have a great deal of character. This program has had one winning season in 15 years. How much more character do we have to have?

That brings up an interesting question. How long should we wait?

Since you're 21 and some of us are well above that level and remember the glory days, we do not want to go Div 1-AA. But if people strike, boycott, attendance goes down, if it goes down too far, we get put on attendance probation by the NCAA police, and we could be forced out of Div-1A. How long do you wait? Well let's see, from 1988-2002, our coaches were subject to the Pye recruiting restrictions which were so ludicrous that it hamstrung the program long after the death penalty went away. Those are gone now, it has been less than 2 years since our coaches were on a slightly negatively tilted playing field from the earlier hugely canted playing field. So, the answer is, let's see how this current crop of players mature over the next two years. I am not sold on Bennett's coaching ability, yet, he may be the Mack Brown of Dallas. But I want to give him a chance to see this crop of players mature into whatever they're going to mature into. After next season, we'll know unequiavocally if Bennett should go or not. Now if Steve Spurrier came to Dallas tomorrow and said, I want to make SMU a winner and I'll work for free, then I might be tempted at that one (although I did see what his abilities are when he had maturing talent in Washington, yuk).

Scamp 6381 don't go away mad, just go away

Lets' see, if it is negative to criticize a losing team, then just how will things change and get better? I get it - say nothing and let the program die. Never! Futile as it may be to point out what's wrong, you can not silence the truth that the emperor has no clothes (an hardly any wins either).

SCAMP said it best: leave the Rice game in Houston and move on. Let's figure out how to beat LaTech.

Go Mustangs!

I sure am glad I didn't have to pay more than $5 for the 6 tickets I bought. I took my sons and grandsons to the game and I was truly embarrassed that my Ponies were not competitive at all.

I listened to the San Jose game and I watched the Boise game on Game Plan. I fully expected the Ponies to be as competitive against Rice as they were in those two games. But the definitely were NOT.

I don't know now if I will go to the UH game next year. If we can't do better than we did against Rice, we don't stand a chance against UH. And that would be more embarrassing than losing to Rice was.
