I think losing Mizzou is a real blow to the Big 12 but could mean the death of the Big East as Louisville, Cincy, TCU and WVU will be top targets for expansion.

I think it's good for us. The DMN reports today that the Big 12 commish says the league's opposition to other Texas schools joining them has "changed."

Which means TCU, not SMU. Mizzou bolts, they aren't going to say hmm let's lose St. Louis and KC markets and add DFW...oh wait! We already own those. How about we add the strong DFW program and other BCS-level schools.

In the end, that would not be all that bad in the sense that at least it kills the Big East and preserves CUSA as we know it and might even strengthen the league by adding USF and Temple, or USF and shifting UTEP to the Mountain West to help them get to 12.

Big east could pick up pieces and add AF, Navy, ECU, UCF< Houston, SMU, Temple and Villanova...

Same old, same old. If we find ourselves in a BCS conference within the next 2 years it will be a miracle. We are so far down the pecking order there is little to no chance in this round of realignment. I expect the worse for us. That way I can be pleasantly surprised later, maybe.

Temple is not currently in the Big East. If Big East adds those schools above, what are the chances that it remains an AQ conference in 2014? If that is the goal, they'd really have to pick up Boise as well.

I think that it will be much harder to take it away from them then to just let them have their one team....

That's why beating TCU this week is so critical.

I think its fairly evident we are not going to the Big 12 and the Big East is about a .01 % chance and thats if they lose TCU. The best we can hope for is for the Big 12 to raid the Big East to the point that the conference is wiped out. Then CUSA cherry picks the scraps and jettisons UTEP to the MWC so we can get to the 24 team superconference thing.

I think you are right...just speculating that if big east gets destroyed it may be easier to cherry pick in that conference and already has AQ status that BCS would have to take away...

Best hope is for the Big 12 to ultimately end up at 16 teams a couple of years down the road.

SMU 46,

Possibly. This round of realignment is not going to be good for us at all. If we can continue to build the program (i.e. 9 or 10 win seasons become the norm) then we will force some conferences to make tough decisions about us. Right now its not even a tough decision. I think the entire realignment landscape this go round has been extremely sobering for SMU. I hope we have more to offer if/when there is another round.
