SMU stats?

Postby braginator » Mon Oct 11, 2004 2:52 pm

I cant find a link anywhere on smumustangs.com that provides our players stats. I looked at the gameday info for this week with no link for our stats, yet a link to La tech's. Is this being done on purpose, are we ashamed of our stats? If someone can provide a link that would be greatly appreciated... :?:

Looking at the stats, I verified what I had heard earlier in that Rice only attempted 5 passes. It reminded me of the Baylor game about 10 or so years ago when they beat us with out making one pass attempt. There was a recent interview in the paper with the quarterback for Baylor in that game. He said that he had been injured prior to the game and couldn't have thrown a pass if he wanted to...but SMU didn't know that. So they would continue to send receivers deep and open up the field for the running game. Not knowing about the injury, SMU of course had to cover the receivers...that kind of seems to be how the Rice game went down. Obviously with Rice making only one reception on five pass attempts, Rice knew they weren't going any place passing, but we have been burned in past games by Rice's passing as well as their rushing, so we had to continue covering the receivers. Ahh, 20-20, ain't it great.

Net Punting is getting to be a glaring problem. SMU is #114 of 177 with 29.17 net yards. It is no longer a case of pooching it inside the 20 affecting the average. We have got to cover punts. Mentzel is averaging 41+ yards per kick.

SMU's punting average is badly skewed by the quick kick punts that Phillips and Eckert have had this year (not sure if Romo has showed off his punting skills or not). Opponents might not have had a lot of return yards off those - if any - but when the punt is that short to start with, the average plummets.

The 41.3 yd average is for Ryan. Chris had 4 punts for an average of 30 yds per punt with a long of 38 yds. No one else has punted. The team average is about 38.9 yds adding Chris's punts and yds to Ryan's total.

Cute story about the Baylor game, but not an ounce of truth to it. The QB's injury was public knowledge, it was in the paper. He was questionable to even play that week. I remember thinking about it while the game was going on, that they didnt want to throw the ball unless they had to, and we never forced them to throw.
Baylor did complete the only pass it attempted that day, a 65 yard touchdown, but it got called back on a penalty.
Wasnt the score of that game a little closer than the Rice debacle? Like 38-10?

...here's a STAT...Rice had 3 guys rush for over 100 yards, unbelievable!! I't not like we were playing Michigan or Miami or OU, we gave up over 100 yards to three "backs" at Rice....that is really the only stat you need to know...long live Putt Choate.

How about the fact that true freshman Adrian Peterson of OU rushed for more yards against Texas than our leading rusher has all season!

No, we were facing the #1 rushing offense, better than #2 by almost 50 yards per game.
