Spurrier Comment in todays paper......."Spurrier, the world's most popular unemployed football coach, is being rumored as a possible replacement at any southern college football program that's struggling." We are a college footbal program (I know it's hard to believe sometimes..), right? We are southern, last time I looked....struggling? I looked up struggling in Websters and it said, see SMU footbal...so, I say we QUIT SCREWING AROUND, cut our losses, and do EVERYTHING in our POWER to get Steve......he would immediately re-energize this program, create a stir in the community, with alums, and in college football, would take the program to the level you all seem to think we can get to......why not? Long Live Dave Smith.
I couldn't agree more! In '89 who was the coach? Nuff said! We need a good day game coach! Bennett has done a good job of Recruiting- but has shown to be a horrible Game day coach. It is time to cut our losses and Hire a big Gun! Now that would be a commitment!
SMU wouldn't pay what it would take to get Spurrier (think what he'd ask in salary to come to a school with our attendance, recent history, TV package, etc.) $5 mil? $10 mil?
And on top of that, they'd have to buy out Coach B. Not happening. Go Ponies! Beat LaTech!
See my post elsewhere on www.ponyfans.com under www.firemackbrown.com. It's UT, not SMU.
but we can still dream...Maybe we could start a fund raiser. We could sell candy bars door to door at the dorms, put donation jars around campus, sell firebennet.com/hirespurrier.com t-shirts(seems to be the rage with the boys in Austin and their coach), get a couple of swank Golf memberships thrown in around town, and see if we can get somebody to pay big money for his naming rights and we should be in. Think of the greatness of having "Your SMU Mustangs coached by Steve Spurrier brought to you by Fill in Your Company Here at Geral J. Ford Stadium"
If we had the audacity to create a slush fund to pay players back in the day, don't you think that we could easily and legally get the $2mil a year to pay for a Spurrier. We could easily get him his own coaching show on Fox, a much larger shoe/clothing deal, and multiple other money earning opportunites. Of course, I am just dreaming but it never hurts to dream pleasant thoughts as opposed to living this continuing nightmare that Bennet presents us. Class of '91
I don't even think we could get him here if we paid him an insane amount of money.......what would you guess it would cost to get him here for 5 years. $50 million. Think he could turn it around by then.
I know it isn't going to happen...... ever, but I guess everyone has to have there price. If i won the Mega Bucks lotto it would be fun to find out what his was.
I totally agree it will never happen.....ever, but what do you think his price would be where he couldn't say no.....20 mil a year, 30 mil.......or is there no price?
Everybody has got to have a price.......i would eat my own poo for the right price.....mmm......poo.
4 to 5 Miltotal package is my guess. It could be a little high but if it had a few incentives or other items in it we might be able to get by a little cheaper. Think Bob Stoops kinda money. I really don't think that everyone is giving my donation jars a chance here. Or we could charge an additional ticketing fee to all undergrads of $450 per year to cover that salary. Think of it as a winning team surcharge. Besides what is $450 a year for what smu is charging per year now for tuition.

don't forget about all the other "perks" that the head coach of a school considerably larger than SMU gets. "The Coach Show" on tv (and the $500K salary that goes w/ it), a 5,000sf house, an Escalade, use of the school jet (does SMU even have a jet?), and above all, the honarary "local hero" status that allows them to get away with murder (or at least sleeping w/ coeds) in the community, dinners with ALL the booster clubs, not just the Mustang Club breakfast, country club membership, etc...
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally
Since our administration is unwilling to truly commit to our football and basketball programs by allowing our coaches to recruit from the same pool as TCU, UH or UTEP, why does anybody now think we would commit $50M to Spurrier?
Here’s a cheaper alternative….recruit by the same standards as UT and TCU.
Even if we came up with $10 million a year he wouldn't consider it. If he was interested in money he would've stuck around for the $15 million remaining with the Redskins.
Spurrier is older than people think. I believe he's in his late fifties. He's never liked to recruit, which he would have to do out the [deleted] here. He is going to go to a school that has the players already there. A school that basically doesn't have to recruit because of who they are. A school that will be able to win a national championship. A school that just needs to be taken to the next level. Think Phil Jackson, but in college football. He will not go anywhere to rebuild. There are only a few schools that fit that description. I could see Texas being a legit option, but I don't think they can fire Mack Brown if he wins 10 games again. Florida may be an option if Zook really screws up this season even more. Tennessee could make sense, he's from there. Also, you never know what coaches might leave at the end of the year for other jobs or the pros, like Stoops or Saban. The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude.

Spurrier has no desire to go anywhere unless there is (1) big money, and (2) a good base of a team, and (3) great visibility. We are not going to win that battle. We don't have a quarterback even as good as Weurfel. We don't have receivers and running backs like Emmett Smith (remember he was a Gator). He has no desire to coach defense, so we would need a coach who knew something about that as well. All in all, it could be an expensive experiment which would fail. I see him going to South Carolina (if Holtz retires), Florida (if Zook gets it), or UT (if Mack gets booted). Now if Mack got the boot, we might give him a call. I think Tennessee is not an option since they pretty much are a lock for the SEC championship game. Miss State doesn't have the money. He might be tempted to look at Ole Miss if the $$$ were right. In the ACC, Georgia Tech, NC State and UNC might be looking as might Clemson.
