Surgery for Coach Rossley

Postby Corso » Wed Oct 13, 2004 2:35 pm

ESPN Radio reported today that Tom Rossley went in for emergency to clear at least one blocked artery. The report quoted Green Bay head coach Mike Sherman as saying Coach Rossley is fine and should recover fully.

Please keep Coach Rossley in your thoughts. Here's to a full and speedy recovery.

I assume that means emergency surgery?

Any idea where the artery is? Heart? One of his limbs?

I was friends with his sons in school, and met him a couple of times -- great guy. Hope he feels better soon.

Let's hope that the 1989 team will be able to celebrate Rossley's good health this weekend when we relive those early days post-DP.

Rossley undergoes angioplasty

Green Bay - Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman's comprehensive duties were expanded this week when his close friend and play-caller Tom Rossley underwent an angioplasty to open a blocked coronary artery Tuesday.

Rossley, 58, was resting comfortably at his home after the procedure and was strongly considering returning to work today, according to Sherman. But even if he is back on the job that soon, the likelihood of him resuming the high-stress assignment of calling plays Sunday against the Detroit Lions appears slim.

Sherman took over the bulk of Rossley's duties on Wednesday, leading the offensive installation of the game plan and overseeing its carry-over to the practice field. Because he and Rossley work so closely together preparing the offensive attack each week, Sherman's duties weren't vastly different from normal.

Backup quarterback Doug Pederson filled some of quarterback coach Darrell Bevell's duties in practice so Bevell could be more hands-on with the offense, but otherwise there wasn't much difference in the way practice was run.

On Sunday, however, things could be different. Sherman, the team's coach and general manager, might be calling plays in a regular-season game for the first time in his National Football League career.

Sherman called plays during the exhibition season as Seattle coach Mike Holmgren's offensive coordinator in 1999 and was set to take over play-calling duties in 2000, but he was hired to coach the Packers before he had a chance to do it. As head coach in Green Bay, Sherman listens in on every call Rossley makes and often suggests plays, but this could be the first time the duties are completely his.

"I wouldn't envision it being a whole lot different than a quarterback having to step in like Doug did two weeks ago," quarterback Brett Favre said. "Even though he's there, he knows the plays, he watches from the sidelines, has seen it 1,000 times.

"But when you get in, it's a little different. But it can be done, so I don't see it being much of a problem."

Few people in and outside of the organization were aware that Rossley was not feeling well Monday evening after the Packers' 48-27 loss to the Tennessee Titans at Lambeau Field.

On Tuesday morning he arrived early at the team's offices to start his workday, but was still feeling poorly, and around 7 a.m. was driven to Bellin Hospital by assistant offensive line coach James Campen.

After undergoing tests, he underwent the angioplasty.

"Obviously, we're real happy things turned out well for him," Bevell said.

Neither Sherman nor the Packers revealed any of the specifics regarding the treatment Rossley received other than he underwent the procedure to clear at least one of his coronary arteries. There was no mention of Rossley suffering a heart attack.

"He's doing much better," said Rossley's wife, Kristine.

Sherman made only a brief announcement about Rossley at the end of his weekly news conference and answered a few short questions as he exited the team's auditorium. According to Sherman, the procedure went well and Rossley was pushing to come back to work immediately.

"He was going to come in today," Sherman said. "I said, 'Don't come in.' He'll probably be in tomorrow and probably somewhat (limited)."
Sherman said he was unsure whether doctors would allow Rossley to make the trip to Detroit. He did not address the possibility of taking over the play-calling duties, but a spokesman for the Packers said Sherman was planning to do so.

Because the players had the day off Tuesday, most didn't find out Rossley was ill until they arrived for medical treatment and meetings Wednesday.

"I heard about it this morning," Favre said. "I was shocked. But I'm also relieved. I had no idea anything was troubling Tom.
