I thought you guys didn't like coaches that run up the score? If that's the case, why would you want Spurrier?

You to have to win games to be able to run up the score!

Ha! Good point. (Although I'll be a total hypocrite and suggest that if SMU's running up the score on someone, it's OK! )

I just can't believe a Spurrier-to-SMU discussion is even being held here, because I'm looking forward to seeing Coach Bennett win so many games that we're worried about keeping him, not replacing him.

Foregive me while I reach back to planet Earth here:

Also...Steve Spurrier is a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Wherever he goes will have to have an ATO chapter. Right now...that ain't S.M.U.!

Any idea as the when that is going to start? Right now, it looks like it is going to take Phil a long time to ever have an overall winning record as a head coach as I believe he is now 4-26.

Let's help the team start it this week by being supportive of the players and coaches.

Hey, easy there Damone...Saban's not going anywhere. 8)

Probably not this year, but eventually he will. Don't see him as a Joe Pa-stay at the same school for forever type of coach. He's got NFL background, does nothing to stop the constant rumors every year, and will eventually leave for a new challenge. Once the family is grown up and out of Baton Rouge. That's just my opinion.

Maybe he can live at the Service House. That's about as close as we can get.

SCAMP

Postby GUNPERUNA » Wed Oct 13, 2004 9:35 pm

Frankly Scamp6381, I don't think this is a political debate. I think Alex Lifeson was asking a legitimate question without prejudice. There has been talk with players on the field that I have heard; but apparently you seem to have an INSIDE TRACK I would be curious to see you answer the question. Regardless, we all have favorites & passion for players so if that is the case I will truly understand.

GO PONIES!!!!

Hey GunPeruna, state your opinion (that's okay).

Don't ask a player's mother to comment about a Coach.

Why don't you give us your exact opinion about your kid's coach/boss!?!?

MY EXACT OPINION

Postby GUNPERUNA » Wed Oct 13, 2004 9:51 pm

My exact opinion is this: The players seem to have no heart & there must be a reason why. They don't seem to know how, nor want to learn how to play football. If we are going to turn this ship around we have to start at the top. I think Bennett is a great coach, but there has definintly been talk about how the players feel about him. I am curious to know.

I hope your son does well this year in academics.

I think the players have heart. They did not let TT hang 70 on them, even though Leach tried. They put forth a great effort against SJS and Boise. Rice, TCU happen. They started out flat and never got their rhythm. So lay off the heart stuff. Remember, most of these players are transfers, freshmen and red-shirt freshmen.

You may be right ONE DAY...But, if Saban ever leaves, it will be for the challenge, alone; not for money or fame or to go coach a bunch of spoiled brats in the NFL. I can tell you he loves Baton Rouge--the people, the community, LSU, his church and the beautiful southern setting. He considers Baton Rouge HOME now.

Frankly, I think SMU and Dallas have a lot of the same to offer. SMU just needs to package it and be willing to sell it.

As far as getting Spurrier... I faced the music long ago that no coach of his caliber is going to come to SMU--at least at this time. Spurrier went from being a household name in College Football and winning National Championships to the NFL where he was the highest paid coach (I believe) for at least a while. Hes' not looking to go to a little school like SMU who can't fill the seats, gets no TV coverage, is currently the bottom of the barrel as far as recruiting, and who gets no support from the local media. Moreover, SMU will NEVER pay someone the kind of money it takes to get Spurrier, if it was even possible.

If SMU was really serious about getting a big name coach at this juncture, and WAS willing to fork out some cash, I think a more realistic choice (relatively speaking...it's still not going to happen) is someone like a Jimmy Johnson--who is currently sitting out of football, isn't really looking to go back and prove something, but who might be tempted to get back into a semi-prestigious college environment and who could recruit AND coach...He seems to me to be the type of guy who would enjoy the challenge of turning a football team like SMU around...Spurrier seems like the kind of guy who would've been gone after the 15th loss in a row.
