For JTStang - attendance subjectThis comes from an article Mr. Mustang1965 posted recently about SJSU. He didn't reference a link.
"Under current NCAA requirements, Division I-A schools must have an average home attendance of 15,000. San Jose State needs to draw almost 60,000 over its three remaining home games or risk a first-offense warning from the NCAA. (Don't know where the writer came up with this scenario.) A second offense could result in a one-year bowl ban and a third could lead to expulsion from Division I-A status. However, many college officials believe that the attendance requirement will never be enforced because of potential legal action. The Division I Board of Directors will make a determination at the end of the 2004-05 academic year." (My emphasis.) Next time I read an article about the requirements possibly being changed, I'll try to remember to get the link for you.
I knew I read this before! Whoo I remember things good (sorry talking about my post under the LA Tech Roll Call)

My apologies for not referencing a link. If memory serves, I believe it was from the San Jose Mercury (newspaper).
Thanks, PK. I am going to assume the new rules will apply unless they NCAA publicly says otherwise. It's sad we have to keep talking about this issue, but frankly I don't believe the sunshine being posted around here about attendance figures. I know for a fact the 36K+ quoted for the Tech game was not the actual attendance, because from the east stands, the several thousand no-shows on the west side were quite obvious. I say the real attendance was about 32k, which is capacity, but less that the "official" attendance. I suspect the "official" attendance at SJSU was overstated as well. Even if we squeak by this year, we will be fighting the same uphill battle next season unless something changes drastically.
From the information that I received from many sources...
The TT game sold over 36,000 tickets. Ticket sales were stopped by the fire marshall in UP. Actual tickets torn were close to 34,100 or so. That would mean that there were 2000 or so NO SHOWS. It happens. The south end zone was covered as well as the standing room between the lower and upper bowls. GO Mustangs Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
Re:
It was Labor Day week-end...some folks go out of town for holidays, so no real suprise that there were some no shows...too bad they didn't give there tickets away for use.
Re:
Where'd you get that info? Just curious. Seems like the powers that be should make the actual attendance information public, so as to create a sense of urgency in order to get more folks to show up. PK, the folks in the west stands are always no-shows, no matter what the weekend. You know that.
JT, there are some folks who live out of town/state who buy season tickets just to help support the program. Some maybe get to come to one game if even that. There are also some seats set aside for season ticket holders that never get bought, so it may look like a lot of no shows, but those seats may have never been sold to begin with. I think you may be assuming too much at times on your observations. Empty seats don't automatically indicate no shows. I know there are some, but lets not make a mountain out of a mole hill.
Actually jtstang, I don't know where you got the 36K figure, because announced attendance was actually right around 34K at the game. There were tons of people on the grass and on the concourse in the south endzone. I think 34K looked pretty accurate to me. Also recall that some people with tickets below also go up to the club and/or suites.
So we have to average just under 8K for the remaining 3 games, one of which is Homecoming and one of which is Band Day. I'm not concerned, at least for this year.
I'm with Diamond M. We have this attendance thing stroked.
SMU does not draw that badly. We just need to play some teams that have alumni in the area. We could bring 15,000 to every game against Baylor, TCU, NTSU, TT, and others. The problem WAS coference. Boise, Nevada, San Jose do not travel. Rice does well enough, Houston will doe well enough. Let's concentrate of getting the Faculty Senate to WANT to win. Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
Re:
Now I'm wondering where I got that number too. In any event, I have always been under the impression that the announced attendance is based on tickets sold. Maybe Stallion can contact one of his old buddies in the SID department to confirm this? My point is this--there were a couple thousand empty seats in the west stands. If the official attendance counts these, which are sold tickets to season ticket holders, then it is overstated. Truth is, I don't think SMU will release the audited numbers reported to NCAA, so we may never know until the Div-1aa reaper comes calling.
