The money piece is not a total pipe dream. Gerald Ford is one of the country's top 25 wealthiest individuals. If he decided he wanted to pay Spurrier type money, he could do so.
You're awfully generous with someone else's money. Why would he decide to do that? A stadium with your name on it is a nice little legacy, but pouring a couple of million a year into someone else's pocket so the folks on PonyFans won't have anything to [deleted] about for awhile would be foolish. He didn't get rich doing foolish things like that.
My statement was simply that the money issue is not a complete pipe dream. I believe I said "that if he decided to".
Fortune magazine listed his net worth in excess of $1.5 billion. He is not a young man. It is not entirely out of the realm of possibilities that he might want to see winning football in his namesake stadium.
My point was (though not very direct) that many of us (and by no means all of us or Diehard Pony or anyone else in particular) expect to sit back and wait for one of our rich cousins to bail us out, or pay for a NAME coach. The Mustang Club has only about 2000 members out of a possible 30,000+ alumni. The MC is the main funding source after the university and ticket sales. If we want better coaches, facilities, etc. then we need to put OUR money where our mouths are and PONY up. (steps off soap box)
Re:
He certainly can't be happy with the product that SMU has put in his stadium since it was completed! Does he even still come to the games?
Gerald Ford and Steve Spurrier are both members of Alpha Tau Omega. Maybe they could work out a 'brother-to-brother' deal.

Re:
Believe it or not, he sits in his suite at most of the home games. It is quite logical to conclude he has not liked what he has seen.

What, do you have the entire national ATO list at your disposal? The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude.

Re:
I thought that he had a suite. I seem to remember seeing him out on the boulevard in prior seasons.

Frank Solich is also unemployedMaybe Nebraska is sorry they let him go but I assume he is still available.
Re:
That's gratitude--all the guy did was give $32M to help this ridiculous program. Come to think of it, maybe the impression you get comes from the fact that he is soured by the negligible impact his last donation made.
Switzer Coming to SMU?Gentlemen,
I have heard Barry is getting interested in coaching college football again. He has stated that he wants ABSOLUTE control over all the aspects of the program (there goes Copeland). SMU could get the alums to front the money for someone of his caliber. Barry's ego would relish the opportunity to bring back the glory of SMU football. I know haters from the DMN and Ticket will come out to dispute these facts. It is a sad state of affairs when people at SMU start talking about new coaches, and people from other schools come on our board and rain on our parade. We need to remain positive and improve our level of visibility. :D
Ford shouldn't be asked to give another penny. If anything, he deserves a refund.
As far as Barry goes, there were rumors that if Houston Nutt would've taken the Nebraska job, Switzer was in line to become coach at Arkansas. I'm sure he has general interest in returning. After coaching one of the, if not the most, storied college and pro teams in history, I don't think SMU would meet his criteria. Imagine how crooked Barry Switzer, SMU head coach, would've sounded in 1990. Hell, its sounds crooked now. The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude.
