Post Game Observations {TCU}

Postby Dr Death » Sat Oct 01, 2011 7:13 pm

Good God man... SMU knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat. This was a big win, beating a Top 20 team on the road and a rival at that... but this game should have never been in OT. Twice JJMcD missed WR's who were open for easy TD's by just barely overthrowing them. Those of you wondering when you'll see the R&S... the biggest difference right now is Brennan completed passes in the 70-75% range... here it's more in the 50-56% range.

That's a huge difference. If McD hits those two passes, the score is 47-23 and TCU would have had no chance and thus, no fight left in them. Credit to McD for hanging in there and delivering a beautiful game-winning TD pass, but the inconsistency needs to be addressed.

Penalties... were the Mustangs doing their best Oakland Raider impersonation today or what? False starts... jumping off-sides... these are mental lapses that cannot be tolerated.

Huge play for the ST's on the opening kick-off to start the second half. Just huge!

Very disappointed that SMU gets the ball at midfield and gains only 7 yards on the last drive of regulation. They need better consistency and a killer attitude. Several times today they could have buried TCU but they didn't... either because of penalties or passes that just missed.

There were glimpses of how good they can be in this offense... but they'll need more than a few glimpses to get better.

4-1 though is good. Especially considering how they blew a 27-10 lead. It's a step. Lots of work to do yet.

TCU... when the cameras showed their cheerleaders... damn, they have a couple of brunettes that were really fine looking. Other than them... the Horned Frogs must be really distraught.

Congrats to SMU on the win... now get better and more consistent. This team can compete... they just need more consistency.

Just to keep it in mind, our special teams won this game. No mistakes and a score. Can[t beat that.

Decent observations, I agree McD's completion percentage has got to be better going forward. Still missing way too open receivers.

And the play calling by June!!!! 7 minutes left in the game up by 16 and we have JJMcD throwing 20 yards downfield every down???? I think there was a time inside of 7 minutes where SMU attemptem 6 consecutive passes.

I don't have a problem w/ the play-calling because the opponent is expecting you to run to use clock... so one huge pass can break the game open. But he doesn't have Jeff George or Colt Brennan here so he needs to either use more short passes or some shovel passes to Zach.

I don't ever criticize a coach for being aggressive. If he had run 3 straight times for 5 yards they still would have punted. I get the point you're making about taking time off the clock... but consistency and execution are just as important as play-calling.

Yes, I think fatterson ran off and did not congratulate JJ. What great sportsmanship. I guess you can expect that from the froggies and fort worthless.

Excellent observations DrDeath. Let's hope McDermott can improve on his accuracy. There were definitely a few flashes of brilliance and a lot of missed opportunities today. Need to be more consitent. Still a great win for SMU against the Frogs.

I hope that is not the case. If it is, that is beyond poor sportsmanship.

When the game ended an assistant jumped on Jones and kind of shoved him down the field. By the time Jones started looking for Patterson there were people all over the field and I do not think Jones could get back to where Patterson was. As much as I do not respect the way Patterson blames his own players and coaches, I do not think he would run from shaking JJs hand.
