Switzer coming to SMU?

Postby Sir Trolls A Lot » Thu Oct 14, 2004 4:23 pm

As a native Oklahoman and proud SMU alum, I can barely contain the joy I'm feeling after reading DennisSimonGuy's post (Spurrier thread, page 3). I'm excited because I've also heard similar rumblings. As a SMU freshman, I roomed with a SMU football player who later transferred to OU. While he wasn't able to make the cut as a Sooner player, he did manage for forge a friendship with Switzer while in Norman (long story). Anyway, I'd heard from him rumblings that the former OU coach and national championship winner was thinking about getting into college football again and hoping to do so with a rebuilding program-a team he could really put his signature on and bring back to greatness as a finally testimony of his skill as a coach and leader.

Switzer has many ties to Dallas. He's a regular on the Ticket (yes, I know the station is worthless, but it's still a tie) and I think he owns property in the area. I plan to do what I can to bring him here.

I can't do as much for the cause as some people can. I can't write a $32 million check or even sponsor ponyfans.com as superfan Rogers Healey has done. There are a few things I can do, however, and I urge my fellow ponyfans to do the same. I'm going to call the Ticket and write the DMN. I'm going to contact the Daily Campus. I'm going to let people in the media know that no matter what poor attitudes they might have about the Mustangs, there are dedicated people behind the Ponies who care deeply about this program. I'm going to let everyone know that SMU is ready for a true committment to our athletic programs and we are ready for a man like Barry Switzer to finally come to the Hilltop.

Goodbye Copeland, goodbye Bennett. Hello Barry Switzer, head coach of the #1 in the country SMU Mustangs!

Switzer isn't coming to a mid-level conference school ever. If he did, we'd have to institute weapons checks in the dorms.

If so, DFW Airport may also want to beef up the security at the check-in gates.

Repeating what I said on the other thread: Barry Switzer = Death Penalty 2.

Barry switzer's brain got the death penalty a long time ago.

After he was first hired as coach of the Cowboys, I met him at Love field. We were both waiting at the same terminal. I was watching the pre-season game between the Redskins and whoever they were playing.

He walks up next to me, and we start talking football. He asks me, how is that new QB for the Redskins doing, what's his name?

This is the HEAD FOOTBALL COACH Of the Dallas Cowboys. And he did not know the name of the Number 1 draft pick and new starting QB of the Redskins, Heath Shuler.

I lost immediate respect for the guy. He never did anything to gain it back. I would be extremely dissappointed if SMU hired him on.

In defense of him, the guy won a Super Bowl with the Cowboys. That's a pretty exclusive club. Sure you can say Jimmy Johnson gave him the players, blah, blah, blah. Lot's of coaches have been hired and given all the players in the world only to not win. Not to mention he also won a few national championships.

That said, he ain't coming here.
The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude.

Trivia Question (3 guesses and the first two don't count)
Speaking of Jimmy Johnson, where did he get his first college coaching job in the 1960s?

Mr.Mustang65,

I have grown tired of your excessive negativity. As someone with no real ties to the university, I find it hard that you would have any real ties to the football program. If we could get Barry, which I believe is a high possibility, the program would get buzz and people would begin to pay attention.

I find it likely that you have bought into the pessimism that is prevalent in Dallas media outlets (aka DMN and the Ticket).

I don't know MrMustang 1965, but SMU can use more fans like him. He is active on this board and supports SMU athletics despite not being an SMU graduate.

So the UT/OU fans who packed the Cotton Bowl last Saturday all hold diplomas from Norman or Austin? The Texas Tech fans who helped fill Ford Stadium and boosted SMU's revenue/attendance figures are all Red Raider alumni? SMU's only genuine fans were SMU students with "ties to the program"?

Please join reality - SMU has a shallow fan base...most of Dallas doesn't even think about SMU athletics...the Dallas media is mostly disinterested in SMU athletics...and you feel comfortable questioning someone's affection for/ties to the program?

SMU is fortunate to have any and all of its fans. I am an SMU graduate who doesn't agree with everything posted on this board but I am grateful that other fans care about the Mustangs...including MrMustang 1965.

Why are we wasting 'bandwidth' on a discussion about Switzer?

He was a terrific "PRO" (read: players who are paid) Coach. OU & Cowboys...

He could never 'teach' today's amatuer players, that is 2004 NCAA players, the game.

Me? Negative? OMG! Stop the presses! Please go back and read the majority of my posts on www.ponyfans.com. I've been accused of being anything BUT negative by many of the others who post here. I've been accused of being the most OPTIMISTIC and UNREALISTIC poster on this board because of my faith and belief in the SMU football program for so many years. If you want to believe that Barry Switzer is coming to SMU, far be it from me to rain on your parade. But you may have just taken the title of OPTIMISTIC and UNREALISTIC away from me on this board! As for me having 'no real ties' to the university or its football program....no, I didn't play football here or even go to school here but many of my relatives did including my father and mother and a great uncle who played on the football team in the late 20s and early 30s...but as Cheesesteak said, I pride myself on supporting the school and the football program and other athletic programs whenever possible. It's too bad more Dallasites don't, as well.

Cheesesteak,

DennisSimonGuy is hitting on an issue that we alumni all aware of on this board. Mr.Mustang1965 makes 2.5% of the post on the board, which is rather strange for someone with no ties to the program. His hijacking of a board for serious SMU fans has hindered the discussion on it.

Everyone on this board has to admit that they wonder why Mr. Mustang is so active. It is rather odd. One of my old fraternity brothers claims it is because he wants job connections in the DFW area. I think it is because he has to much time on his hands, and we are rather easy targets.

Cheesesteak, it is good that someone buys into the idea that we should not be covered by the media. Although, if you are really an alum, it would be surprising. Some of us would like to read about our alma mater in the newspaper.

That is a cheap shot and a low blow.

I had the pleasure of meeting MrMustang1965 (albeit briefly) on The Boulevard before the Tech game. I wish all fans had his optimism and enthusiasm. He's a great asset to the SMU fan base and to this site. At least he hopes SMU wins and believes we will. I'm with him.

UPDATE

Postby Sir Trolls A Lot » Fri Oct 15, 2004 2:06 pm

I've been talking to my source in Norman. He said he mentioned to Coach Switzer the buzz that has been going on on this board. Don't think he won't come here. He's excited by the support of SMU's true fans that post on this board and is looking to prove wrong the many haters on this board who don't think the university has the committment to bring a world-class coach to make a phoenix of our football team.

Long live Barry Switzer, head coach of the SMU Mustangs!
