National Championships

Postby LA_Mustang » Sun Oct 02, 2011 12:19 pm

They listed us with three National Championships on the broadcast yesterday - 1935, 1981 and 1982. Don't most just recognize the AP #1? I thought 35 was our only one we were credited with. Btw, is there any display of our championship(s) at Ford? If so, I've never noticed it.

Yeah, most only recognize AP...we were awarded the Natl. Championship in 81/82 by other publications, so for recruiting purposes, media purposes, we do, and should say we won 3. Let someone challenge us on it and then we can get into arguing over the garbage call to give Penn State the AP title in 82 when that fossil Paterno was supposed to retire.

Ark claims one when Jimmy and Jerry played, but that is imputed since they were 2 and won their bowl and no 1 lost. Back then, the bowl was a reward, and it didn't count (hence a bowl loss didn't hurt you)

Same way tcu claims 35, when smu beat them that year. We lost our bowl after we were declared nat champ. Tcu 2, won their bowl.

If I recall correctly.

There was no trophy in 1935 - so nothing to display as far as I know. No AP until 1936. Visit Heritage Hall at Ford to see lots of great SMU Athletic history - and not just for football.

via wikipedia: The 1935 Mustangs were crowned national champions by Frank Dickinson,[2] a nationally respected economics professor at the University of Illinois. Although Minnesota was proclaimed the 1935 national champion by the AP and UPI polls, SMU usually claims the 1935 national title without qualification, even though they lost the Rose Bowl, because the Dickinson System was the first to gain widespread national public and media acceptance as a selector of national champions.

It would be nice to that displayed at Ford for visitors to see.
