Re: Big East CEOs Agree to Aggressively Purrsue ExpansionWould have to think that they are looking to get to 10 or 12 Football programs to remain viable and since there arent that many truly solid programs on the block and those that are probably look at the BE with scorn its going to be a challenge for the conference. Also, if they want to hold onto TCU it would be in their best interest to scoop up another school in Texas to give them a travel break and an in-conference geographic rival. I would think that theyre looking at ECU, UCF, Navy and Temple, which all make geographic sense, but then maybe UH and SMU? Realistically I bet they go after 4 football programs.
Re: Big East CEOs Agree to Aggressively Pursue ExpansionAir Force and Navy, as football only members, may be a priorty. If I was MWC, I would not be happy about a member, who wants to exit FB but keep the benefits for remaining sports. Surprisely, UCF and Houston do not appear to be candidates, but Memphis, Villanova and/or Temple are? Remember that Connecticut and Rutger are anxious to jump to ACC.
My sense if that Big East will be a first mover. If they fumble, the Catholic BB schools may create a BB only conference. Pony Up
Re: Big East CEOs Agree to Aggressively Pursue ExpansionI think Army, Navy, and Air Force have already turned them down. That's not a good start for the Big East.
The Big East has got some Hard, Hard decisions to make about it's identity and what it wants, and one they have put off for over a decade now. I truly believe it has made it much harder on itself by trying to please everybody - having non-football and football playing schools in one conference. By having both, they have had to limit the number of football playing schools it has and therefore could never compete with the sheer numbers of the ACC or others, thereby limiting the amount of money it made on football and putting them at an inherent disadvantage. Thus the basketball school have really made it difficult on the football schools. Furthermore, their identity of a Northeastern based conference is almost gone. Only UConn and Rutgers are left, and they want out - Temple alone isn't going to save them. They have already started moving South and West, and are going to have to continue to do so. Frankly, the Big East as a name may stay, but it's about to have a completely accent at the meetings. Part of the problem lies in the fact that Seton Hall, St. John's, and Villanova have NOTHING in common with ECU or Houston. TCU, a small private secularized-Christian school, at least on paper has something in common with them, and even they were bought in as a stop-gap - I'm sure all weren't happy about it. Instead of doing the same thing again, and saying 'Okay, bring in more schools' they need to sit down and decide who wants in, who wants to play basketball, and what they want to be, and then go from there.
Re: Big East CEOs Agree to Aggressively Purrsue Expansion
That's part of the problem - they can't. They have what? 8 basketball schools? So if they go to 12 football teams they will have a 20 school conference. That's too big, even for basketball. So they will always be the smaller, weaker football conference.
Re: Big East CEOs Agree to Aggressively Pursue Expansionthey need to split from the bball schools.
they have to wait on the big 12 first. they could be destroyed.
Re: Big East CEOs Agree to Aggressively Pursue ExpansionIts possible that South Florida is the last one to turn out the lights

Re: Big East CEOs Agree to Aggressively Pursue Expansions fla may get blocked from cusa by ucf.
Re: Big East CEOs Agree to Aggressively Pursue ExpansionIf they wanted ECU, it would have happened. They've applied two-dozen times. They've been turned down-publicly. They have been put behind two service academies. If I'm ECU, I'm quite nervous moving forward because apparently, nobody is apparently interested in what they're selling. Now, although these things change daily, they weren't even "discussed" as an option, and they're the only ones who have applied...openly.
Re: Big East CEOs Agree to Aggressively Pursue ExpansionESPN article mentions SMU as new candidate for Big East...

Re: Big East CEOs Agree to Aggressively Pursue ExpansionOh now you wanna come be our friend ?
Re: Big East CEOs Agree to Aggressively Pursue ExpansionI know most feel that TCU will go out of its way to block us, but we may be the lesser of two evils for them. If the Big East loses anymore teams, UCONN has made lots of noise about wanting to be in the ACC and the Big12 may raid, then the Big East will be in dire straights. They are basically on life support already. If TCU wants to avoid the Big 12 mess and stay in a BCS conference they may need us for stability. The Big East is going to need to grab several schools and will probably push to add another one from Texas. In this push they will probably lower academic standards. TCU can either let us: a great rivalry that generates lots of revenue, a school with high academic standards, and one that frees up a non conference game, in or they can let in more low academic schools to compete with. If the Big East goes we need a Texas school: Houston or SMU, which one would you rather have to compete against? One that will let anyone in or one that has high standards and you already play? We may be a bitter pill to swallow, but we hold our athletes to higher standards than other schools they would be potentially competing against.
Just a thought and who knows how this realignment will play out.
Re: Big East CEOs Agree to Aggressively Pursue ExpansionTechnically, TCU doesn't have a BE vote until next year (if they end up joining..)
Re: Big East CEOs Agree to Aggressively Pursue ExpansionTCU will not block us if it is in their interests. To say otherwise is ridiculous.
Re: Big East CEOs Agree to Aggressively Pursue Expansionit makes sense for them to have a regional rival in the big east...and that's what we are. locks up scheduling the rivalry and also significantly reduces travel costs they would be looking at otherwise
