To me this is a bit laughable as I'm not sure what to think about it, but what do I know. I'm just a ponyfan and not a NFL scout. Cool pub though. J.J. McDermott, QB, SMU -- Last week, McDermott was mentioned in this column as a player to watch and, almost on cue, he displayed why scouts are excited about his next-level potential. During the contest against TCU, the crosstown program which had dominated SMU for almost six years, McDermott helped give the Mustangs an early lead, then answered anytime TCU tried to claw back into the game. The senior completed 51 percent of his passes for 349 yards and four scores, including the game-winning throw in overtime. Though he has some mechanical aspects to iron out, McDermott displays the skills and tools necessary to play at the NFL level. Never even mentioned by scouts entering the season, he has now firmly positioned himself as a draftable prospect. Read more: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/w ... z1ZbZnYaik

Not so laughable. He has been an excellent study. Seems determined, and from what I've seen via TV, he realizes his misatkes, and ready to quickly improve. Not super mobile, but that could change a bit. Think, who would have thought Aaron Rodgers would be where he is today, back when he was an unknown JC pickup?

from week 4 Keep an eye on SMU senior quarterback J.J. McDermott, who is gaining momentum in scouting circles. Elevated to the starting position after the first game of the season, McDermott has the size and arm strength needed for the next level and is now putting the pieces together after minimal playing time the prior four years. McDermott began his college career at New Mexico State under Hal Mumme before transferring to SMU. Evidently, Mumme sang the praises of McDermott, touting his potential before the signal caller arrived at SMU. The Mustangs' next three games against TCU, Central Florida and Southern Mississippi will be challenging for McDermott and give scouts a better barometer of where the potential sleeper stands. I'm sure some people would take JJ over Romo right now.

I will say after watching the play multiple times, his arm strength on the 71 yd pass to Wilkerson is very apparent. That pass was a deep strike.
