They just aren't any good

Postby BRStang » Sat Oct 16, 2004 7:18 pm

Granted, La Tech has lost to Auburn, Tennessee and Miami (3 top 15 teams), but they were ABUSED in those games. Now, they're ABUSING us.

Our Defense is so inconsistent...can't stop the big play.

Our Offense is impotent...can't even get 3 off a turnover on the 18 yd line.

Allowed 38 points and gave up 3 turnovers in the first half, alone. La Tech has 420 yards in the first half; they are averaging 12.2 a play... Can't wait for the second half!!!

Bennett puts in Romo as receiver/tailback??? Then takes Eckert out and allows Romo to complete the "drive"...Romo overthrows Foster for an easy 6??

Either the team isn't being coached to allow their talent to let them hang in there, or they never had any to begin with...either way, Bennett is proving that he needs to go.

The current state of affairs is reminiscent of last season...the absolute low point of SMU football history.

Bennett is a nice guy, and I wish him well, but he needs to go back and coach defense at some mid-level BCS school. I admit that after Boise State, I was optimistic that he might be turning the corner, but after these last two performances, I am now convinced I was mistaken. This is an ugly embarrassment.

Don't forget the 44-0 shaming at the hands of Tarrant County University.

I didn't really expect any better than 2 wins this year, but it is discouraging getting blown out by Rice and La Tech. These are teams I had hoped we'd at least be competitive with. Good time to have a week off. Gotta scrape this bunch off the floor. If we are down, think about how tough it is for them right now.

Just got back from the game. Hung in there until 5 minutes remaining.

This has been the ugliest two years of SMU football I have ever witnessed, and I have been watching them since the 70's.

As all of you know, we have now lost 17 of our last 18. I wonder what the 1989 Mustangs that were being honored must have thought, as even they didn't play down to this level with only a handful of scholarship players.

We don't execute any aspect of the game well...offense, defense, special teams, etc. I am becoming increasingly convinced we are not going to turn it around under Bennett. He's a nice guy, works hard, etc. but the results are absurd.

Believe me, I go every week hoping to see some small positive signs, but they just aren't there.

There is not a single area of this team's play that has improved as the season has progressed. In fact, one could argue that this team is playing worse than it was at the beginning of the season.

Just think how bad it would be if Cavan had not been fired!

don't look now, but Tulsa is tied with Boise at 35 all and Nevada is whipping Rice 21-3. We could be looking at 1-10

This team will be lucky to win another game this year. Who has the longest losing streak going right now?

At 2-9, I could see SMU keeping Bennett around...but at 1-10, I just don't see how he could keep his job.

If they do, and he does, it will be clear that there is no commitment to winning or to the alumni by the administration.

How could you possibly argue otherwise?

Good point. We're all complaining about the results - and rightly so - but they're also upset about the results, plus they're going through the physical beating. But they've proven to be a resilient bunch. Good time for the off-week.

Well I have been on the Bennett Bandwagon for a while, but after tonight, I may have to get off at the next station.

This team was just unprepared, bottom line.

Defensively, that had to be the worst performance I have seen in a long time. If I had a $100 for each missed tackle, I might be a the Mercedes dealership paying cash for a car!

Akenyemi was just horrible tonight, outplayed all night long.

I am willing to be patient, but show me some progress. We have taken huge steps back since SJSU and Boise.

I will say this. Even with the 4 interceptions, I think you stick with Eckert. Give the guy a chance to grow. This season is toast, use it to give him some experience and then let the QB situation flush out in the spring. But find a QB for gosh sakes and stick with him. This rotating QBs for 3 stinking years is killing me!

In what manner have they proved to be resilient?? 17 losses in 18 games would not support that.

The rest of the new/young guys deserve the same chance to grow and learn, don't you think?

I agree that they deserve the chance to learn and grow, but come on coaches, have a game plan that gives them half a chance. Defensively, we looked like we did not have a clue. To my earlier point, do we just not know how to tackle? Basic fundamentals.

My biggest fear is that the guys are quitting on Bennett. Once that happens, a change at Coach will have to happen. Sad. I really like Bennett from a personal standpoint, but this team needs to at least show some competitiveness. This is like a tease each year, we play some good teams tough and then get spanked by everyone else.

The more I type, the more I realize Bennett needs to get his two deep healthy and some upper classmen, but the excuses have to stop some time.

Offensively, we need to find guys that can hang on to a football. Chris Foster is definetely showing that he can be a go to guy. If we can get Pellerin going, we may have a couple of decent receivers.

Defensively, we need to figure out how we can get pressue on the QB. That starts with a secondary that can actually cover receivers so that we can mix in some blitzes etc.

Well my rant is over. In the end, I will still be an SMU Fan. Now I am going to stick it out just to spite everyone! LOL!
